{"id":1021,"date":"2010-09-02T11:36:27","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T18:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2010-09-02T16:48:06","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T23:48:06","slug":"the-great-glider-dilemma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2010\/09\/02\/the-great-glider-dilemma\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Glider Dilemma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi All (two of you who read my blog)!\u00a0 Sorry to leave y&#8217;all with such a downer post.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be happy to know this week has been much better (knock on wood).<\/p>\n<p>One of the things T and I have been focused on lately is getting a glider\/ottoman for the nursery.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0been super difficult to find an inexpensive glider that fit both T and I &#8211;\u00a0always a problem whenever we need furniture because of our height disparity.\u00a0 Really nice gliders\u00a0that are made to last can cost upwards of $1,000 or more (as we found out when we went to the LA Rocking Chair Store).\u00a0 Even moderately nice, large gliders from a chain store (which\u00a0appearantly often break down after a couple of years) can still run $500-700.\u00a0 Smaller and\/or cheaper gliders can cost anywhere from $100-400.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, we wanted\u00a0to buy one of the nicer gliders used.\u00a0 Towards that end, we&#8217;ve been stalking Craigslist.\u00a0 T found the perfect glider\/ottoman (pictured without the matching ottoman below) for $150 on Craigslist Saturday.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/files\/2010\/09\/3n43p03lb5O05X55R1a8r24f514be39101ee2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1022\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/files\/2010\/09\/3n43p03lb5O05X55R1a8r24f514be39101ee2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0immediately called and were able to schedule an appointment to see it that same day, so we headed out to Malibu (wondering the entire time why anyone who could afford to live in Malibu would bother selling stuff on Craigslist&#8230;).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We loved the glider!\u00a0 It was comfortable for both of us, had thick cushions and an\u00a0automatic locking system, was in good condition, was 1\/4th its original price, and even\u00a0fit our color scheme.\u00a0 In short, it was PERFECT&#8230;except that\u00a0it squeaked!\u00a0 T&#8217;s not one to let something like that bother him, but we both thought there was a high probability it would drive me nuts.\u00a0 So we hemmed and hawed, debated, flipped-flopped and considered a ton of other gliders in all price ranges.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I decided (T basically left the decision up to me as he knew I&#8217;d be harder to please) that I would ask if the seller would accept $100 for the glider and ottoman\u00a0&#8211; figuring at that price I could either tolerate the squeaking or we could buy another glider later if it really drove me nuts.\u00a0 To my surprise, the seller quickly\u00a0agreed (this is evidently\u00a0the bonus of\u00a0buying from someone who can afford to live in Malibu &#8211; she didn&#8217;t\u00a0really seem to care how much she sold it for, she just wanted to get rid of it quickly)\u00a0and\u00a0T and a friend picked up the glider and ottoman\u00a0the very next day!\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s currently sitting in our nursery, where it barely squeaks at all (maybe because its on carpeting and not\u00a0in the garage, as it was when we\u00a0saw\u00a0it).\u00a0 I&#8217;m so\u00a0thrilled with our purchase and am totally in love with\u00a0Craigslist.\u00a0 =)<\/p>\n<p>The nursery itself is still a mess, but it&#8217;s\u00a0shaping up.\u00a0 Once I convince T to part with the guest bed and we get the crib, I can start decorating for Baby Cakes!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi All (two of you who read my blog)!\u00a0 Sorry to leave y&#8217;all with such a downer post.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be happy to know this week has been much better (knock on wood).
