Thus by it the irresolute<br \/>\nIs guided to the path of firm resolve.<br \/>\nBountiful he, whose hand no bounty knew;<br \/>\nAnd he that never yet forbore forbeareth,<br \/>\nDespite the goad of anger. The tribe\u2019s dunce,<br \/>\nCould he but kiss its filter, by that kiss<br \/>\nWould win the sense of all its attributes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Describe it, well thou knowest how it is,\u2019<br \/>\nThey bid me. Yea, its qualities I know:<br \/>\nNot water and not air nor fire nor earth,<br \/>\nBut purity for water, and for air<br \/>\nSubtlety, light for fire, spirit for earth\u2014<br \/>\nExcellencies that guide to extol its good<br \/>\nAll who would tell of it, and excellent<br \/>\nTheir prose in praise of it, excellent their verse.<br \/>\nSo he that knew not of it<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><\/a>[7]\u00a0can rejoice<br \/>\nTo hear it mentioned, as Nu\u2018m\u2019s lover doth<br \/>\nTo hear her name, whenever Nu\u2018m is named.<\/p>\n<p>Before all beings, in Eternity<br \/>\nIt is, ere yet was any shape or trace.<br \/>\nThrough it things were, then it by them was veiled,<br \/>\nWisely, from him who understandeth not.<br \/>\nMy spirit loved it, was made one with it,<br \/>\nBut not as bodies each in other merge.<br \/>\nWine without vine:\u00a0Adam\u00a0my father is.<br \/>\nVine without wine, vine mothereth it and me.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><\/a>[8]<br \/>\nVessels are purer for the purity<br \/>\nOf truths which are their content, and those truths<br \/>\nAre heightened<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><\/a>[9]<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>by the vessels being pure.<br \/>\nThings have been diff\u2019renced, and yet all is One:<br \/>\nOur spirits wine are, and our bodies vine.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><\/a>[10]<\/p>\n<p>Before it no before is, after it<br \/>\nNo after is; absolute its privilege<br \/>\nTo be before all afters. Ere time\u2019s span<br \/>\nIt pressing was, and our first father\u2019s<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><\/a>[11]\u00a0age<br \/>\nCame afterwards\u2014parentless orphan it!<br \/>\nThey tell me: \u2018Thou hast drunk iniquity\u2019.<br \/>\nNot so, I have but drunk what not to drink<br \/>\nWould be for me iniquitous indeed.<br \/>\nGood for the monastery folk, that oft<br \/>\nThey drunken were with it, yet drank it not,<br \/>\nThough fain would drink. But ecstasy from it<br \/>\nWas mine ere I existed, shall be mine<br \/>\nBeyond my bones\u2019 decaying. Drink it pure!<br \/>\nBut if thou needs must have it mixed, \u2018twere sin<br \/>\nTo shun mouth-water<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><\/a>[12]\u00a0from the Loved One\u2019s lips.<\/p>\n<p>Go seek it in the tavern; bid it unveil<br \/>\nTo strains of music. It is to this Name that every mention of the wine\u2019s name refers throughout the poem. The tribe is the brotherhood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\"><\/a>[2]\u00a0The Prophet is not only the cup, but also, as Seal of the Prophets, the seal upon the wine-jar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\"><\/a>[3]\u00a0Literally \u2018unveil her\u2019, for\u00a0<em>khamr<\/em>\u00a0(wine) is feminine. As Arberry remarks in the notes to his translation, the comparison of the unveiling of a becobwebbed wine-jar with the unveiling of a bride is frequent \u2018in bacchic poetry\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref4\" name=\"_ftn4\"><\/a>[4]\u00a0The riders are the advanced initiates,\u00a0<em>s\u00e2lik\u00fbn<\/em>\u00a0(travelers), who are immune from the effects of poison which, according to N\u00e2bulus\u00ee, is the passionate attachment to worldly things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref5\" name=\"_ftn5\"><\/a>[5]\u00a0Again according to N\u00e2bulus\u00ee, the enchanter is the Spiritual Master and the madman is one who takes appearances for reality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref6\" name=\"_ftn6\"><\/a>[6]\u00a0Another reference to the brotherhood, this time as an army whose warriors are engaged in the Greater Holy War (<em>al-jih\u00e2d al-akbar<\/em>), \u2018the war against the soul\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref7\" name=\"_ftn7\"><\/a>[7]\u00a0Every human being is in love with the wine even if he be not conscious of it. The descriptions of it serve to awaken that latent love. Nu\u2018m, like Layl\u00e2, is one of those women\u2019s names by which Sufis denote the Divine Essence. Love of Nu\u2018m and love of the wine may therefore be said to coincide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref8\" name=\"_ftn8\"><\/a>[8]\u00a0At the level of my oneness with the principial wine in Eternity\u2014wine which, being absolutely independent, is therefore in no need of grape or vine for its existence\u2014I am a true son of\u00a0Adam\u00a0who, as\u00a0Logos, prefigures my union by his. The vine is\u00a0<em>Najas ar-Rahm\u00e2n<\/em>\u00a0(the Breath of the All-Merciful) which is also termed\u00a0<em>at-Tab\u00ee\u2018ah<\/em>\u00a0(Universal Nature), the feminine or maternal source of all manifestation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref9\" name=\"_ftn9\"><\/a>[9]\u00a0Reading\u00a0<em>tasmu<\/em>\u00a0as in the oldest manuscript. It is for the mystic to ensure, by the ritual means at his disposal, that his soul is filled with spiritual presences or truths. These presences have a purifying effect upon the soul which is their vessel, and this increase of purity qualifies the vessel to endure a heightening of the truths. If we read\u00a0<em>tanmu<\/em>\u2018have increase\u2019, as in the other manuscripts, the meaning is not basically changed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref10\" name=\"_ftn10\"><\/a>[10]\u00a0But, as N\u00e2bulus\u00ee remarks, the vine contains the spiritual juice which will ultimately be transmuted into wine. We may compare the lines of Ibn al-F\u00e2rid\u2019s younger contemporary, \u2018Al\u00ee ash-Shushtar\u00ee:<\/p>\n<p>Behold My beauty, witness of Me<br \/>\nIn every man,<br \/>\nLike the water flowing through<br \/>\nThe sap of branches.<br \/>\nOne water drink they, yet they flower<br \/>\nIn many hues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref11\" name=\"_ftn11\"><\/a>[11]\u00a0It is not the spiritual or \u2018winal\u2019 nature of\u00a0Adam\u00a0which is referred to here but his human or \u2018vineal\u2019 nature, of which the Prophet said:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was a Prophet when\u00a0Adam\u00a0was yet between water and clay.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studiesincomparativereligion.com\/Public\/articles\/The_Wine_Song-al-Khamriyyah-of%20_Umar_Ibn_al-Farid.aspx#_ftnref12\" name=\"_ftn12\"><\/a>[12]\u00a0If you have not the spiritual strength for oneness with the Divine Essence Itself, then let the water that you mix the wine with be nothing less than \u2018the saliva of God\u2019, that is, the Supreme Spirit, which, if it be not fully Him, is not other than Him. The mixing of the wine thus signifies the emergence of the\u00a0Logos,\u00a0<em>ar-R\u00fbh al-Muhammad\u00ee<\/em>, and this explains the mention of stars in line four. The manifestation of the Spirit of Muhammad precipitates the existence of the Spirits of his Companions, whom he likened to stars: \u2018My Companions are even as the stars. Whichsoever of them ye follow, ye shall be rightly guided\u2019. By extension the words \u2018how many stars\u2019 may be taken to include those Saints who are the heirs of the Companions in subsequent generations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span
