{"id":3117,"date":"2020-10-22T08:40:21","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T13:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/sulaymanibnqiddees\/?p=3117"},"modified":"2020-10-27T08:09:23","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T13:09:23","slug":"lament-for-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sulaymanibnqiddees\/2020\/10\/22\/lament-for-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Lament for Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"359\" width=\"584\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.independent.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nigeria-Flag-In-Blood-700x430.jpg?resize=584%2C359&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Lament for Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response to the Lekki massacre, inspired by the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lU1Khjx7wVI\">\u1e62eun Kuti<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NOS3YsiTQf0\">Aisha Yesufu<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">dear god<br \/>\nI come from two countries<br \/>\none is thirsty<br \/>\nthe other is on fire<br \/>\nboth need water<br \/>\n-warsan shire<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A new moon rose up in the ember months over Nigeria<br \/>\nA new spring burst forth as the fires fell over Nigeria<br \/>\nTo God I complain of the pain in my heart over Nigeria<br \/>\nBecause of the loss of family, my friends over Nigeria<br \/>\nMy eyes fill with tears, hot, heavy as lead over Nigeria<br \/>\nBut what good are tears for the bullet-pierced dead all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nThe lions are silent, the eagles have fled over Nigeria<br \/>\nMy grief turns me away from my bed over Nigeria<br \/>\nNigeria is dead, long reign her people over Nigeria<br \/>\nBut she\u2019s long been dead, vultures overhead all over Nigeria<br \/>\nFighting for carrion, squawking with bald heads, all over Nigeria<br \/>\nAs they carry on, feasting on the dead all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThis poem was written and traced in the blood all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThat\u2019s reddened the skies, our eyes, and the mud all over Nigeria<br \/>\nTears flow ceaselessly, flooding all the streams all over Nigeria<br \/>\nGrief\u2019s withered the hearts, and dried out our dreams all over Nigeria<br \/>\nHow many dark nights have swallowed up screams all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many have vanished, never to be seen, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many have fled the hunger, the dread, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many enslaved, with chains on their heads all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many have died, how many more bled, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many have lied, how many misled, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many gone blind, how many lives shed, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many prayers un\u2014heard stories misread all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nAnd how many sighs like smoke still yet rise all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nHow many more till we stand tall once more over Nigeria?<br \/>\nBut God will not change our state until we, all over Nigeria<br \/>\n\u2018Till we change our state, decide to be free all over Nigeria<br \/>\nFor it is no sin to lament and grieve all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThe sin is for us to stay on our knees all over Nigeria<br \/>\nWill we be slaves or will we be free all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nWho\u2019s sacrificed for whose gluttonous greed all over Nigeria?<br \/>\n\u1eccl\u1ecdrun! give youth the wisdom we need all over Nigeria<br \/>\nTo uproot oppression, corruption\u2019s disease all over Nigeria<br \/>\nAnd give our elders the eyes that can see, all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThe root is rotten, so down fall the trees all over Nigeria<br \/>\nLong fingers and robes, eyes never at rest, all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThe arms of the law serve these masters the best, all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThe nation was built to steal our wealth all over Nigeria<br \/>\nCan you make a gun a fountain of health all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nThe leopard changed skin, but not his dark spots all over Nigeria<br \/>\nIs it a wonder he never gets caught all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nBut one day the prey go catch the hunter all over Nigeria<br \/>\nIs this just proverb, or this na today, all over Nigeria?<br \/>\nOur leaders are fingers of an empty glove all over Nigeria<br \/>\nKeeping the hands clean that pillage and reave all over Nigeria<br \/>\nOyinbo chop, plump up on the pain all over Nigeria<br \/>\nTheir glove sated with the palm oil stains all over Nigeria<br \/>\nOur life has flowed out into foreign banks all over Nigeria<br \/>\nNow Kwara, \u1eccya, overruns its banks all over Nigeria<br \/>\nOrimili rise, sweep rubbish aside all over Nigeria<br \/>\nMaayo Jaaliba come drown all the lies all over Nigeria<br \/>\nEeepa! Disobey! For all over Nigeria<br \/>\nThe unjust laws of unjust men are killing our Nigeria<br \/>\nIs this alright? Tell me is this OK?
