The disciple of Ibn ‘Arabi, ‘Af\u012bf al-din Tilims\u0101n\u012b (d. 1291), and his son (known as al-Shab al-\u1e92ar\u012bf,<\/em> “The Elegant Youth”\u00a0<\/em>) are\u00a0known and loved for their poetry, some of which is still sung today. \u00a0Here I present one poem from the father, and a more famous poem by the son with special thanks to K.M. for help with the translations.<\/p>\n

‘Af\u012bf al-D\u012bn al-Tilims\u0101n\u012b<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Translation:<\/p>\n

Don’t be fooled by the fineness of her cheek<\/h6>\n
For the sword slays by the fineness of its blade<\/h6>\n
Leave the eyelids, for their drowsiness has become<\/h6>\n
a\u00a0point in the straightened spear of her\u00a0stature<\/h6>\n
My sleep, like a gazelle, is constantly fleeing from me<\/h6>\n
For he unites his opposite with his exile<\/h6>\n
Frailty flowed into my body from her coldness<\/h6>\n
And I loved it because it is from her<\/h6>\n
The enviers were amazed, having seen my drunkenness without limit<\/h6>\n
while my heart endured the punishment of her limits*<\/h6>\n
Be easy, for doesn’t the flapping of her sash<\/h6>\n
resemble my heart or the flame of her cheek?<\/h6>\n
This\u00a0is a connection, that were my heart to attain it, ablaze<\/h6>\n
I would forgive her in its burning<\/h6>\n
My thanks to my patience with her, for when she betrayed me<\/h6>\n
I saw betrayal as faithfulness to her promise<\/h6>\n
My weeping from distance and being crushed<\/h6>\n
Is a pearl in my hands, not in her necklace<\/h6>\n
