Amir Khusro wrote several poems about Basant, a pre-Islamic Panjabi\/South Asian\/Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of spring by flying kites, wearing yellow, carrying yellow flowers. A\u00a0legend goes that Amir Khusro’s shaykh, Nizamuddin, was mourning the death of his nephew when Amir Khusro came with a whole Basant procession to cheer him up. Chisti Sufis have celebrated Basant ever since.<\/p>\n

Translation:<\/p>\n

Rejoice in the spring, beautiful bride,
\nRejoice in\u00a0the spring today.
\nPut make-up on your face and lashes
\nAnd comb your long hair.
\nYou’re still dead\u00a0sleep,
\nGet up, beautiful bride.
\nDestiny is knocking on your door,
\nEnjoy this spring, O bride.<\/p>\n

A snobbish lady with arrogant looks,
\nThat\u2019s what you are.
\nThe king of Amir, on seeing you,
\nWill cast glances of love towards you.<\/p>\n

The spring is here again,
\nRejoice in\u00a0the spring today.<\/p>\n

Aaj basant manaalay suhaagun,
\nAaj basant manaalay;
\nAnjan manjan kar piya mori,
\nLambay neher lagaaye;
\nTu kya sovay neend ki maasi,
\nSo jaagay teray bhaag, suhaagun,
\nAaj basant manalay\u2026..;
\nOonchi naar kay oonchay chitvan,
\nAyso diyo hai banaaye;
\nShaah-e Amir tohay dekhan ko,
\nNainon say naina milaaye,
\nSuhaagun, aaj basant manaalay.<\/p>\n
