Apart from using striking symbols to attract attention and spark conversation, we talked to passers-by and got supporters to write individual letters to their representatives and senators. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/stoptorture\/files\/2007\/04\/Harvard%20press%20release%20for%20habeas%20protest.pdf\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were joined by folks at Dartmouth, CUNY, NYU &amp; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlg.org\/\">National Lawyers Guild<\/a>.  More schools are joining in the rest of the lobbying effort coordinated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/stoptorture\/wp-admin\/www.ccr-ny.org\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Constitutional Rights<\/a>. The actions, which all began at noon Eastern Standard Time, were organized by law students and coordinated by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), which represents many of the detainees at Guant\u00e1namo and coordinates the work of nearly 500 pro bono attorneys.<\/p>\n<p><!-- D([\"mb\",\"\\u003cbr\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;\\u003cp\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Habeas corpus, or the Great Writ, is the legal procedure\\nthat keeps the government from holding prisoners indefinitely without showing\\ncause and has been a pillar of Western legal systems since the signing of the\\nMagna Carta in 1215. The passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006\\neffectively stripped the Guant\u00e1namo detainees of their right to challenge their\\ndetention, despite two Supreme Court rulings that stated detainees do have the\\nright to habeas corpus. \\u003cbr\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;\\u003c\/p\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;\\u003cp\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Said \\u003cb\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;CCR attorney Emi\\nMacLean\\u003c\/b\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;, \\u003ci\\&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;It is a moral disgrace that\\nwe would deny the fundamental right to habeas corpus to anyone.
