You probably know it’s just an old fashioned love story about a German boy falling in love with an American GI, then having a sex change operation so he can move to the United States with the guy and live happily ever after…except the sex change has complications and he/she is left with an inch of flesh down there. Subsequently, the GI dumps her, she starts writing songs, she babysits a military brat and then falls in love with him, they break up, he steals her songs and becomes a star and she’s relegated to performing at chain restaurants around the country.

You know…same old-same old story.

Anyway, there’s a scene in the movie where Hansel (before becoming Hedwig) is being seduced by the American GI and it involves Gummy Bears. Upon their second meeting, Hansel follows a path of confectionary delights to find the American GI naked on a rock.

This morning as I was walking down Mass. Ave I discovered a similar trail of Gummy Bears. I couldn’t tell you exactly where it began because at first I was thinking somebody had accidentally dropped a few gummy bears. But after a few blocks I realized that every 7-10 feet or so I’d find a happy little gummy bear laying on the sidewalk. Eventually, the path took a corner that I didn’t need to take to get to work so I abandoned the trail. This will be one of life’s great mysteries for me. Where did this path begin? Where did it end? What was the purpose of this path? Was it a Hedwig fan? I’ll never know.

One of my favorite all-time movies is Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
