When we first met, I was the introverted shy guy who wanted to stay home all the time and watch videos on TV. Matt was the social guy who forced me to start living. Today, nearly a decade later, the roles have completely reversed. Matt would much rather stay home and watch DVD’s, while I was making new friends and craving a social life.

My method of meeting new people (since I’ve been at the same job for a number of year and am not a bar person) has been the internet. I’ve made some good friends that I hang out with in real life and some cyber friends who I’ve not met in person (not yet, anyway). I’ve been chatting with one mid-western cyber friend regularly for over 4 years.

And although I wasn’t using the internet for cyber sex (stop laughing – it’s true!), I have apparently met and chatted up quite a few people over the years (and lost contact with most when I didn’t feel the friendship connection). This became clear to me yesterday morning when Matt informed me that he has begun trying to make new friends.

He first told me of this one guy who’s description souned familiar. Lo and behold, it was a guy that I had emailed with a few times (but don’t really know…I wouldn’t even call him an acquaintance). Then, last night, he started telling me about this other guy he met who he thought seemed really cool. Once again, his description sounded familiar and when he told me his name, I was sure it was somebody I’d been chatting with regularly for the past 4 months. We looked at his profile and, yep, it’s him. There’s a third guy Matt’s been chatting up and, fortunately, I don’t know him.

Now it’s making me wonder how much of a cyber geek I must be if 2 out of 3 people Matt’s tried be-friending are people I’ve been in contact with casually.

One of the issues that Matt and I were dealing with over the past few years was our polar opposite social lives.
