His hair was parted down the middle and it was sticking out in all directions with thick goop in it (I correctly assumed he was having his hair dyed).

As I eaves dropped on his conversation with his stylist, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He seemed so sad and unsure of himself…and filled with fear. At one point, this 40-something man said that he had never been to New York City, even though he has lived in Malden, MA all of his life. The distance between Boston and New York is only 200 miles – about a 3.5 hour drive (or 4 hour train ride). He started asking the stylist about a Faneuil Hall Marketplace he heard about in Manhattan (I’m assuming he was asking about the South Street Seaport since Faneuil Hall is a Boston landmark building).

The stylist had evidently cut this man’s hair before and from the rest of their conversation, I’m beginning to think that he chose this salon for it’s proximity to the Orange Line (the subway line that heads up towards Malden). I wouldn’t be surprised if he only comes into the city to get his “hair done” because he’s embarassed to do it in his own town. In fact, he also exhibited a complete unfamiliarity with Boston…which is only 10 minutes from Malden. It’s such a shame – I wanted to grab his hand and show him the rest of the city and tell him there’s a whole other world out there.

Anyway, my haircut was finished before he was done but I was able to see the resulting color. It was pitch black. I’m talking that incredibly aritificial black that does not grow naturally on a caucasion man. And this made me wonder if, like balding men doing a comb-over, he thinks people can’t tell that it’s not natural? And that just made me more sad.

Now I’m depressed.

Matt and I decided to get haircuts this morning, but on the way there Matt said he didn’t feel like going to the “hairdresser” (apparently he forgot it wasn’t 1952 anymore…and that we weren’t housewives).
