I had invited my friend, Rich, to join my family since he wasn’t able to go home to his family in Chicago. So, after work on Wednesday, Rich picked me up and we drove to Cape Cod. There was no traffic at all; everybody must have left work early. Apparently, rush hour the day before Thanksgiving is THE time to travel.

We arrived at my parents, had a quick bite to eat then headed to the store to pick up a Christmas tree (more on that later). It goes without saying that the gang of us (Mom, Dad, brother, Rich and me) played Rummy – and I came in last place.

On Thanksgiving Day, Rich woke up bright and early and started preparing the meal. Before you start yelling at me for having the guest cook dinner….Rich enjoys cooking and finds it relaxing.

And, to be honest, my entire family was glad that’s the case because he made the most extraordinary home made stuffing, gravy and mashed potatos (which, for my family, has always come out of a jar or a box).

MMMMMMM – we all ate so much we were never able to dive into the 3 pies we had (one compliments of Harvard Law School…thanks Dean Kagan!).

After another round of rummy (where I lost again), Rich and I returned to Boston playing Christmas music. Now tis’ officially the season!

Today I spent setting up the tree in anticipation of tomorrow night’s little soiree. I’m having a handful of friends over to assist in decorating the tree. What I didn’t realize in the store was the size of this tree. It’s enormous (and my apartment is not). I also fear I won’t have enough decorations to make it look complete.

In addition to setting up the tree, I’ve been baking. Yep, you read it right: I have been baking. Granted, everything is coming from a package or box, but I plan on providing my guests cookies, brownies and ginger bread. My place smells like a bakery…which I enjoyed at first but am now finding rather nauseating. Who knew that was possible?

I proclaim that 4 day weekends such as this should be a regular thing.
