St. Anthony’s Feast begins in my neighborhood this evening. The lights and decorations have been up for a few weeks (but the lights haven’t been turned on yet). Even the beautifully tacky stage has been erected around the corner. Last night as I got home from work the city had already blocked off my street, and many of the surrounding streets, in preparation. The canolli, pasta and sausage carts are already setting up shop on the street. Things officially begin this evening at 7:00PM. Then they run through 11PM on Sunday night.<\/P>

But it doesn’t end there. At that time, it becomes St. Lucy’s Feast and runs through Monday night at 11:00PM when a candlelight procession will carry a statue of Santa Lucia to it’s permanent home on Endicott Street (which is the next street over from mine).<\/P>

It’s going to be chaos. But I suspect it will be fun chaos. I love this sort of unique atmosphere. Then again, it’s going to be really difficult to get to my apartment through the masses of people so there’s a chance I’ll start getting frustrated by Sunday. Although when I think about it, I’ve only lived in high tourist destinations (Cape Cod, Salem, San Francisco, Boston, Newburyport) and at least this is just a long weekend and not an entire season.<\/P>

My only fear is that I’ll lose power. Just a week ago my neighborhood had problems with manhole covers popping and underground fires causing the North End to lose power. So with all of the wires dangling from buildings to light the decorations, stages and vendors’ booths, there’s definitely going to be some major power surging into the area. EEK! I must say – it does look like a fire hazard. I’m sure I’ll be taking pictures of the actual festivities. But I may snap a few of the pre-historic wiring with hundreds of wires going into one little box on the side of a building. Then again, if I lose power, I won’t have a way to download the pictures. ugh<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
