The plan was to go to his place in great-outer suburbia and have a barbecue. He picked me up at 6PM in a sweltering Davis Square and drove me to his house in Stoneham. I must say, Gil takes landscaping to an all new level. His entire lawn is strewn with cherry trees, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, zuchinni, yellow squash, tomato and assorted flowers and bushes. It was quite beautiful.

For dinner, he had marinated some chicken the night before. Other than that, all other food was grown in his yard (beans, zuchini and yellow squash). For a salad, we walked into the front yard and he explained that certain flowers are edible. So, he picked choice buds from various areas, rinsed them off and we had them for the salad.

It was a lovely looking salad filled with yellows and purples. It even tasted great, too – kind of like a somewhat sweet lettuce. We follwed that with the grilled marinated chicken and vegetables. As we finished eating, some large thunderstorms passed through – cooling things off quite nicely. We were having a great time.

And then it hit me. Apparently, my body is not used to eating flowers (particularly in such quantities, I’m sure). I’m not going to go into any gory details, but let’s just say that when I got home I weighed myself on my scale and I was 5 pounds lighter than when I weighed myself in the morning. I guess my Mom was right – I really must be full of shit.

Anyway, I beg of you, please, don’t eat the daisies.

*That was my nice Doris Day movie reference for those of you who are homosexually-impaired.

Seriously – you’ll regret it.
