{"id":96,"date":"2005-04-08T21:35:05","date_gmt":"2005-04-09T01:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/metasj\/2005\/04\/08\/brittanica-buys-yahooglepaedia-to-comp"},"modified":"2005-04-08T21:35:05","modified_gmt":"2005-04-09T01:35:05","slug":"brittanica-buys-yahooglepaedia-to-compete-with-wikicarta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2005\/04\/08\/brittanica-buys-yahooglepaedia-to-compete-with-wikicarta\/","title":{"rendered":"Brittanica buys Yahoo!glepaedia, to compete with Wikicarta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a852'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>The week in wiki, retold via the Wiki Muse&#8230; I mean, Wikinews.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>While Wikipedia was still recovering from an attempted <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia_victim_of_onslaught_of_April_Fool's_jokes\">April 1 buyout by Britannica<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> the German Wikipedia DVD was released, announced, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/browse\/-\/464378\/ref%3Dcs%5Fnav%5Fsn%5F14\/028-3794306-5464516\"><b>hit #1<\/b>(now back to #2) on Amazon&#8217;s software bestseller list<\/a>,\n<li>  <b>Yahoo!<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Wikimedia_announces_Yahoo%21_support\">declared its plans<\/a> to mirror WP content on a massive Korean server farm and started <a href=\"\">linking French searches<\/a> to WP articles, and\n<li> Encarta just today touted the rollout of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/MSN_Encarta_introduces_wiki-like_enhancements\">pseudo-wiki<\/a> encyclopedia editing system, reminiscent of the successful <a href=\"http:\/\/nupedia.8media.org\/join.shtml\"><b>Nupedia<\/b> process<\/a>.  Ahh yes, and they would love to <a href=\"http:\/\/developers.slashdot.org\/comments.pl?sid=145464&amp;threshold=-1&amp;commentsort=0&amp;tid=109&amp;mode=thread&amp;cid=12183739\">pay you<\/a> for your editing time.  They also have a contractual obligation never to mention the word &#8220;Wiki-&#8221; in public \ud83d\ude42\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, while Encarta is opening itself to wiki-style editing from the masses, and wants to make its mark as a reliable source of content, it doesn&#8217;t even list the names of its editors, not to mention email addresses or ways to get in touch with them.  Having a <a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.msn.com\/members\/Encarta\/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c=\">blog <\/a> hidden away on an MSN Space where a few users can contact one or two of the online editors just isn&#8217;t the same.
