{"id":904,"date":"2008-10-19T19:20:21","date_gmt":"2008-10-19T23:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=904"},"modified":"2008-10-19T19:20:21","modified_gmt":"2008-10-19T23:20:21","slug":"solitaire-sex-and-architectures-of-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2008\/10\/19\/solitaire-sex-and-architectures-of-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"Solitaire, sex, and architectures of collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00b4m in <strong>Peru<\/strong> at the moment with Scott Ananian, so here\u00b4s a quick post from the recyclingbin of recent history:<\/p>\n<p>Clay Shirky and Martin Wattenberg team up to battle the <strong>TIMEWARS<\/strong> villains.\u00a0\u00a0 They estimate that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noiselabs.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/06\/1-weekend-of-tv-ads-1-wikipedia\/\">a weekend of commercials is 1 Wikipedia<\/a> &#8212; 100 million hours of human attention.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not quite right &#8212; Wikipedia is a living process, not only doubling in size, scope, and effort a little over once a year; its creation is not simply a matter of time invested, but networks formed, and social connections and research off-wiki that lead to the same.\u00a0\u00a0 And commercial watching may be passive&#8230; but the point stands.\u00a0 And as I have noted before, <strong>Solitaire<\/strong> is an even more explicit example of this &#8212; an active way to waste time, which soaks up billions of hours of attention a year.<\/p>\n<p>And let&#8217;s not forget the massive amounts of time spent on indulgences &#8212; sex and its trappings, food, artefactless social networking and the like &#8212; something which, like idle leisure time, balloons to fit the time available, in crisis and in plenty.\u00a0\u00a0 Most people have an extra 4 to 5 hours a day to devote to creative collaboration, especially if it satisfies their social and entertainment drives and overlaps neatly with \/ contributes to their work.\u00a0 This comes to <strong>300B<\/strong> hours a year, in our country alone.\u00a0 This is among the greatest assets in the world, available equally to all; now <em>go change society<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00b4m in Peru at the moment with Scott Ananian, so here\u00b4s a quick post from the recyclingbin of recent history: Clay Shirky and Martin Wattenberg team up to battle the TIMEWARS villains.\u00a0\u00a0 They estimate that a weekend of commercials is 1 Wikipedia &#8212; 100 million hours of human attention.
