{"id":856,"date":"2008-09-19T14:56:25","date_gmt":"2008-09-19T18:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=856"},"modified":"2011-01-29T02:23:36","modified_gmt":"2011-01-29T06:23:36","slug":"how-wikipedia-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2008\/09\/19\/how-wikipedia-works\/","title":{"rendered":"How Wikipedia Works : the book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you just want an immediate glimpse into how Wikipedia works (and you know you do), visit <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:NewPages\">New Pages<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:RecentChanges\">Recent Changes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion\">Articles for Deletion<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:News\">News<\/a>, and browse the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:Statistics\">Stats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a more detailed look, a handy book, and want to start contributing yourself, pick up a copy of <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHow-Wikipedia-Works-You-Part%2Fdp%2F159327176X&amp;tag=httpblogsla01-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">How Wikipedia Works:<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHow-Wikipedia-Works-You-Part%2Fdp%2F159327176X&amp;tag=httpblogsla01-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\"> And How You Can Be a Part Of It<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 This is a charming and helpful book by my dear friend and longtime collaborator <a href=\"http:\/\/phoebeayers.info\/\"><strong>Phoebe Ayers<\/strong><\/a>, in collaboration with\u00a0<strong>Charles Matthews<\/strong> (Chris Ball&#8217;s old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/go\/Go (game)\">Go<\/a> mentor) and the ever-popular <strong>Ben Yates<\/strong> (of <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Wikimania_2006_banner.png\"><strong>Wikimania logo<\/strong><\/a> fame :).\u00a0 Phoebe and I stayed up many nights going over the <strong>outline<\/strong> and deciding what should go into a book like this, and I&#8217;m thrilled to see it on the shelves.<\/p>\n<p><em>How Wikipedia Works<\/em> is the first edition of what will hopefully become a lasting tradition.\u00a0 A popular, non-technical book available <strong>under a free license<\/strong> &#8211; that alone is unusual. \u00a0 And what I look forward to more than giving it to my newbie friends (I&#8217;m looking at you, Ed) is seeing collaboration around it over time.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howwikipediaworks.com\/\">How Wikipedia Works<\/a> will hopefully find its commentable and editable online home soon.<\/p>\n<p>Production notes: <strong>Bill Pollock <\/strong>(who first took a chance on the idea) and <strong>Tyler Ortman<\/strong> at <strong>No Starch Press<\/strong> did a beautiful job with the final book; our office now has a copy if you want to see it.\u00a0 Every year I am more impressed with their <a href=\"http:\/\/nostarch.com\/catalog.htm\">press<\/a> : now that <em><strong>HWW<\/strong><\/em> is hitting the shelves, I can&#8217;t wait to see <a href=\"http:\/\/nostarch.com\/mg_statistics.htm\"><em>The Manga Guide to Statistics<\/em><\/a> (being a long-time fan of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Who-Fourier-Transnational-College-Tokyo\/dp\/0964350408\">Who is Fourier?<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Quantum-Mechanics-Physics-Adventure\/dp\/0964350416\/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b\">What is Quantum Mechanics?<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHow-Wikipedia-Works-You-Part%2Fdp%2F159327176X&amp;tag=httpblogsla01-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Amazon has copies of How Wikipedia Works<\/a> for under $20.\u00a0 Amazingly, someone from Livrenor already has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/159327176X\/ref=dp_olp_2\">used copy on sale<\/a> for $40 &#8212; an instant classic?! they specialize in rare and out-of-print titles; presumably this is the former: a how-to book that makes you smile!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you just want an immediate glimpse into how Wikipedia works (and you know you do), visit New Pages, Recent Changes, Articles for Deletion, and the News, and browse the Stats.
