{"id":853,"date":"2008-09-13T11:52:34","date_gmt":"2008-09-13T15:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=853"},"modified":"2008-09-18T04:13:44","modified_gmt":"2008-09-18T08:13:44","slug":"ike-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2008\/09\/13\/ike-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Ike strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ike<\/strong> hit Texas hard this morning, straight over central Galveston. \u00a0They say 3m will be out of power for two weeks&#8230; including our house in Houston.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: \u00a0Our street was lucky. \u00a0Our house is good as ever, having no enormous trees nearby. \u00a0My mother reports the only noise it made was a loud humming from the gutters at a certain windspeed (I could hear it over the phone!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 2<\/strong>: A house across the street had its roof aerated by falling trees from both adjacent properties, and the ancient oak in the open lot next to us (vacated and cleared after the last big flood) was ripped down. \u00a0Flooding wasn&#8217;t bad; only 2 ft of water in the street. \u00a0The local <strong>bayou <\/strong>is far from the main channel, and was a good 3 feet from flowing over when high tide passed at 4pm. \u00a010 blocks away things were worse&#8230; \u00a0Now everyone just has to make do without power for the next fortnight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 3<\/strong>: Only 1m are still without power; we expect to do without for another week.<\/p>\n<p>And this is why we went into space 40 years ago: an image of Ike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/multimedia\/hurr_ike091008.html\">from the International Space Station<\/a>&#8230; with a little &#8216;station finger&#8217; over the lens. \u00a0Great buildings such as the Pyramids and the Wall are, despite what they say, hard to see from space. \u00a0But massive atmospherics? \u00a0You can see those <strong>from Saturn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nasa.gov\/images\/content\/272832main_ISS017E015752_lo.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"Ike ...
