{"id":373,"date":"2003-06-03T10:43:59","date_gmt":"2003-06-03T14:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/metasj\/2003\/06\/03\/smoking-is-sexy\/"},"modified":"2003-06-03T10:43:59","modified_gmt":"2003-06-03T14:43:59","slug":"smoking-is-sexy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2003\/06\/03\/smoking-is-sexy\/","title":{"rendered":"Smoking is Sexy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a94'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P>Smoking is sexy.&nbsp; Many of my generation seem not only to disagree, but to <STRONG>mistake<\/STRONG> this basic truth for the fallout of advertising or the self-deception of smokers.&nbsp; But <STRONG>I don&#8217;t smoke<\/STRONG>, nor grew up around smokers.&nbsp; And I&#8217;m not the only one of this description who enjoys discovering a good smoke-filled bar for its ambience.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>My dear friend <A href=\"http:\/\/laboratorium.net\">James<\/A> recently wrote about the current <A href=\"http:\/\/www.laboratorium.net\/SometimesACigarAd.html\">state of tobacco advertising<\/A> in the US, and&nbsp;the games advertisers play to color within the implicit lines of the culturally and legally acceptable.&nbsp; James points out that one could hardly find legal fault with a private <STRONG>non-profit<\/STRONG> group that put out ads promoting the pleasure and sexiness of smoking, without promoting&nbsp;a particular <STRONG>brand<\/STRONG>.
