What can this teach us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the US government <strong>shutdown<\/strong>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/home2\/shutdown-message.html\">Library of Congress website<\/a> went down today. \u00a0So did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\">NASA<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/outage.html\">NSF<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usda.gov\/fundinglapse.htm\">USDA<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/shutdown.html\">FTC<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/shutdown\/index.html\">National Park Service<\/a>. \u00a0On the other hand, privately-run websites such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\">Internet Archive<\/a> (and, thankfully, its glorious <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wayback.archive.org\">Wayback Machine<\/a><\/strong>!) remain online and unaffected by these sorts of government changes.<\/p>\n<p>As we plan for making our Internet more robust in the future, we should make sure to avoid single (or small-group) points of failure, as even services run by major corporations or governments can go offline in a hurry. \u00a0(People who live their lives on Google tools: I&#8217;m looking at you \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia itself should be sure to support a thriving mirror network, and should probably move towards a fully <strong>distributed<\/strong> cache-and-forward model where possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the US government shutdown, the Library of Congress website went down today. \u00a0So did NASA, the NSF, the USDA, the FTC, and the National Park Service. \u00a0On the other hand, privately-run websites such as the Internet Archive (and, thankfully, its glorious Wayback Machine!) remain online and unaffected by these sorts of government changes.
