\nOn Saturday, Boston was
\nchosen by an 11-person jury to be the host city<\/span> for next summer’s Wikimedia<\/a>
\nconference (aka Wikimania
\n2006<\/span>).  The week-long event on global
\ncollaboration and free knowledge is being sponsored primarily by HLS’s
\nBerkman Center for
\nInternet & Society<\/a>.   Over 50
\nspeakers and 600 attendees from around the planet are expected to
\nattend – an energetic mix of Wikimedia contributors<\/a>;
\nwiki maintainers and developers; academic researchers in law,
\ntechnology, and sociology; and librarians, educators, and
\nentrepreneurs.  <\/p>\n

The decision followed a month-long bid
\nprocess<\/a> that culminated in a deadlocked jury and a week of
\novertime<\/span>
\ndeliberation<\/a>. 
\nThe two finalist bids, for Boston<\/a>
\nand <\/span>Toronto<\/a>,
\nwere both so strong that a jury vote earlier this month was
\ninconclusive.  After asking for more information from both
\nbids and from
\nthe global Wikimedia community, a second vote this past weekend was
\n5–<\/font>4 in favor of Boston,
\nwith 2 abstentions.<\/p>\n

The Toronto <\/span>bid
\nincluded a generous offer of from the University of Toronto’s
\n
\nKnowledge Media Design
\nInstitute<\/a>, including free use of their new Bahen Centre for Information Technology<\/a>,
\nand was supported by an impressive local team.  
\n
\n 
\nThe Boston<\/span> bid is
\nsupported by its own local team; by the Berkman
\nCenter (offering space, funding
\nand enthusiasm); by the MIT Media
\nLab<\/a>‘s electronic
\npublishing<\/a> group (offering to host part of the event); and by
\nmany smaller local
\ngroups<\/a> of the Boston event in various ways.<\/p>\n
