{"id":2360,"date":"2012-04-26T07:57:16","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T11:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=2360"},"modified":"2012-04-26T07:57:16","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T11:57:16","slug":"how-to-use-12m-bibliographic-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2012\/04\/26\/how-to-use-12m-bibliographic-records\/","title":{"rendered":"How will YOU use 12M bibliographic records?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard Libraries recently released bibliodata from their collections &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperorg.com\/blogger\/2012\/04\/24\/2b2keverythingismiscbig-data-for-books-harvard-puts-metadata-for-12m-library-items-into-the-public-domain\/\">12 million works in all<\/a> &#8211; under a CC-0 license, which lets other sites and researchers reuse that data in any way possible.<\/p>\n<p>This is the biggest release of bibliographic data of its kind &#8212; four times the size of a <a href=\"http:\/\/openbiblio.net\/2010\/11\/17\/jisc-openbibliography-british-library-data-release\/\">similar release<\/a> by the British Library in late 2010.\u00a0 (Without an explicit release under a free license, such collections of metadata are covered by &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Database_right\">database rights<\/a>&#8216;).<\/p>\n<p>How would you reuse these records in your own work and dreams?\u00a0 Some quick ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WP or Wikisource could create 12 million stubs with those records<\/li>\n<li>Open Library will improve and update its own metadata collection, which was built from scraped subsets of such data<\/li>\n<li>We can write scripts that autogenerate &#8220;lists of works&#8221; for authors and authors or categories for works<\/li>\n<li>We can automatically find mismatches between our person-data and title-data and those in MARC<\/li>\n<li>We can publicly clean up mistakes in the MARC catalog and suggest updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard Libraries recently released bibliodata from their collections &#8211; 12 million works in all &#8211; under a CC-0 license, which lets other sites and researchers reuse that data in any way possible.
