(yes, it&#8217;s what you think.\u00a0 yes, it makes sense for all devices below a certain power-to-area ratio&#8230; a ratio that gets larger in the tropics.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fuseproject.com\">fuseproject<\/a>&#8216;s design work is, as usual, interstellar.<\/p>\n<p>Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diamond Age\">Neal Stephenson<\/a> for extra inspiration this time around. \u00a0(Update: as Kim Bruning notes, now we need to write the primer.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.laptop.org\/2012\/01\/10\/an-xo-1-75-running-directly-off-a-solar-panel-video\/\">video of an XO powered only by a solar panel<\/a> twice its area. \u00a0that&#8217;s using the least expensive solar tech; panels twice that density can be had for under $4\/Watt .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The XO-3 design is almost finished.\u00a0 And there is a steady stream of loving video and photo coverage of the first prototypes, from the gadget-geek journalists at this week&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
