Proton: 1Gev&#8230; Higgs: 125Gev?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An example of deep understanding vs. casual understanding:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/profmattstrassler.com\">Matt Strassler<\/a><\/strong> provides an <a href=\"http:\/\/profmattstrassler.com\/2011\/12\/14\/a-trly-spectacular-year\/\">eloquent, balanced summary<\/a> of what we have recently learned about a possible Higgs particle (or particles). \u00a0He notes that recent data have simplified the possible answers to an important question, there are a limited number of possibilities left, and we can find an answer among those possibilities within the next year. \u00a0He offers a useful diagram of what we know and don&#8217;t know, as it has changed over the past year &#8212; subtlely modifying their past work to hone in on the remaining possible energies for a Higgs particle.<\/p>\n<p>Strassler&#8217;s approach is universally useful. \u00a0It teaches others about this particular experiment, about the field of particle physics, and about how to do science.<\/p>\n<p>Gibbs&#8217;s approach is a quick hack, of temporary value in the current discussion, but gives a limited understanding of the state of research and may give the wrong idea about how to analyse and interpret research.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists trying to ride the coattails of a pending discovery often have received no new information about whether their ideas are right or wrong. \u00a0\u00a0To show their work in the best light, they\u00a0misstate the current understanding of their own field, give students a harmful model to follow, and damage the public understanding of what science does and how to understand it&#8230;
