{"id":1645,"date":"2011-02-27T20:31:28","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T00:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=1645"},"modified":"2011-03-11T04:30:46","modified_gmt":"2011-03-11T08:30:46","slug":"plagiarising-satire-as-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2011\/02\/27\/plagiarising-satire-as-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Plagiarising satire as news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tehran_Times\">Tehran Times<\/a>, an English-language paper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tehrantimes.com\/Index_info.asp?I=A\">based in Tehran<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/abna.ir\/data.asp?lang=3&amp;id=228583\">other<\/a> Iranian news sources, engaged in a bit of Internet journalism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tehrantimes.com\/index_View.asp?code=236523\">copying<\/a> some <a href=\"http:\/\/dawnwires.com\/politics\/saudi-king-to-buy-facebook-to-end-the-revolt\/\"> satire<\/a> (&#8216;Saudi king offers to buy Facebook for $150B to end revolt&#8217;) &#8212; down to a misspelling of Zuck&#8217;s name &#8212; into a summary of news on the King&#8217;s announced plans for social reform (providing cheap land for housing).  This got its fifteen minutes of fame on forums and Twitter, enough to draw a brief <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elnashra.com\/news-1-535771.html\">official denial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not news that minor news agencies can be too busy to check facts or worry about copyright, but you&#8217;d think they would be more sensitive to satire.
