{"id":1152,"date":"2009-11-17T09:43:33","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T13:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/?p=1152"},"modified":"2009-12-06T09:44:25","modified_gmt":"2009-12-06T13:44:25","slug":"scozzafava-politics-and-my-old-home-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sj\/2009\/11\/17\/scozzafava-politics-and-my-old-home-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Scozzafava: Politics and my old home town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just minutes from my old home town in NY-24, \u00a0State Assemblywoman\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dede Scozzafava\">Dede Scozzafava<\/a><\/strong> (R-NY) found herself at the center of a remarkable political brawl between the Democratic, Republican, and Conservative Parties, in Congressional district NY-23.<\/p>\n<p>Scozzafava, then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newzjunky.com\/news\/0427scozzafava.htm\">floor leader<\/a> and <strong>Minority Leader <\/strong><strong>Pro Temp<\/strong> in<br \/>\nthe New York State Assembly, has represented Lewis, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Jefferson counties for 10 years. \u00a0She was the Republican candidate in a district that hasn&#8217;t been represented by a Democrat since the Civil War. \u00a0She had a comfortable lead in the race in September, at which point the<br \/>\nunknown and inarticulate Conservative candidate started garnering <strong>attention<\/strong>, and things took a dramatic turn. \u00a0Gingrich, Palin, and Biden got involved on different sides.<\/p>\n<p>The tireless <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.villagevoice.com\/runninscared\/archives\/exploring_the_r\/\">Roy Edroso<\/a><\/strong> carefully <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.villagevoice.com\/runninscared\/archives\/2009\/11\/rightbloggers_g.php?page=1\">charted Scozzafava&#8217;s course<\/a> from certain frontrunner to maligned by half her party, to a surprise suspension of her campaign and endorsement of her Democratic opponent the weekend before the election.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->My only addition to Roy&#8217;s coverage: <strong>everyone<\/strong>, on both sides of the aisle, keeps misspelling Scozzafava&#8217;s fine name. \u00a0Scozafaba, Scazzafova, Scozzaua, even Judy. \u00a0That&#8217;s just wrong, people. \u00a0The <strong>great<\/strong> thing about the Internet is that noone ever needs an excuse to screw up proper names again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just minutes from my old home town in NY-24, \u00a0State Assemblywoman\u00a0 Dede Scozzafava (R-NY) found herself at the center of a remarkable political brawl between the Democratic, Republican, and Conservative Parties, in Congressional district NY-23.
