Well-loved <STRONG>governor<\/STRONG> of Vermont for many years.&nbsp; Riding a wave of public interest and support, fueled in part by&nbsp;his outspoken <STRONG>attacks<\/STRONG> against Bush,&nbsp;which made him seem the Democratic favorite in August even though he was not yet tops&nbsp;in the polls.&nbsp; Extensive grassroots support, through young, hip <STRONG>staff<\/STRONG>, and their embracing of inexpensive online networking.&nbsp; Has been discussing international policy with <STRONG>Clark<\/STRONG>.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.georgewbush.com\/\">Bush<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;bhush&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Clear monetary front-runner, slight popular front-runner as of August.&nbsp; Has fewer campaign workers with their own blogs, but a fancy &#8216;grassroots action&#8217; <A href=\"http:\/\/www.georgewbush.com\">site<\/A>. Copycat <A href=\"http:\/\/www.gwbush.com\">Bush<\/A> <A href=\"http:\/\/www.gwbush04.com\">sites<\/A> abound.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.johnkerry.com\/\">Kerry<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;keh-ree&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Experienced, institutional.&nbsp; Decorated <STRONG>Vietnam<\/STRONG> vet and veteran campaigner.&nbsp; Popular Massachusetts <STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/kerry.senate.gov\/high\/index_high.html\">senator<\/A><\/STRONG>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Early favorite; seemed at first to be the best-positioned candidate to attack Bush&#8217;s position on war in Iraq, due to his combat experience.&nbsp; Famously afraid of appearing on <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ninedwarfs.com\">ninedwarfs<\/A>.&nbsp; Some complaints and&nbsp;defection from campaign staffers.&nbsp; Directly competing (grassroots, young staff, focus on Bush&#8217;s war stance, personal inter-campaign attacks) with Dean from the get-go, but slipping on all fronts by 8\/03.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.dickgephardt2004.com\/\">Gephardt<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;gep-hart&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Famous elder statesman.&nbsp; Respected Missouri <A href=\"http:\/\/dickgephardt.house.gov\/\">Representative<\/A>,&nbsp;party leader in the House.&nbsp; Long admired as a leader within the Democratic Party.&nbsp; Leading in initial Iowa polls.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards2004.com\/\">Edwards<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;ed-wurdz&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Young, handsome.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some critical acclaim among political insiders.&nbsp; Recent national statesman, as a popular North Carolina <A href=\"http:\/\/edwards.senate.gov\/\">senator<\/A>&nbsp;(1st term).&nbsp; Raised quite a bit in contributions in &#8217;03, not so respected in the polls in August.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><A href=\"http:\/\/www.joe2004.com\/\"><STRONG>Lieberman<\/STRONG><\/A> (&#8220;lee-b&#8217;r-mun&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Famously conservative.&nbsp; Widely respected Connecticut <A href=\"http:\/\/lieberman.senate.gov\/\">senator<\/A>, known nationally as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate in 2000.&nbsp; Still the best-known name in the current race, but hadn&#8217;t raised too much in contributions by August.&nbsp; <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.algore04.com\/\">Gore<\/A><\/STRONG>\/<STRONG>Clinton<\/STRONG>\/<STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.draftwesleyclark.com\">Clark<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;gohr-klihn-tun-klark&#8221;):&nbsp; Famous public figures, and mutual friends,&nbsp;each with a body of supporters encouraging them to&nbsp;enter the race.&nbsp;&nbsp;None had declared candidacy by August 15.&nbsp; <BR><\/P><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI>Gore is best known for winning the popular vote for president in 2000, after two terms as <STRONG>vice-president<\/STRONG> and two terms as Tennessee <STRONG>senator<\/STRONG>; he retains a devoted <A href=\"http:\/\/www.draftgore.com\">following<\/A>&nbsp;who hope to strongarm him into running with write-ins.&nbsp;&nbsp;Positioned to be the firebrand of the party.<br \/>\n<LI>Clinton is best known as former <STRONG>first lady<\/STRONG>, and currrently a popular New York <STRONG>senator<\/STRONG>.&nbsp;&nbsp;She has&nbsp;massive support within her party and from women across the country,&nbsp;and would <A href=\"http:\/\/www.pollingreport.com\/wh04gen.htm\">apparently<\/A> be wicked popular if she were to enter the race.<br \/>\n<LI>Clark is best known for his political commentary, and for his book on overseeing Kosovo as&nbsp;SACEUR.&nbsp;&nbsp;The &#8220;Draft Clark&#8221; movement has bipartisan support.&nbsp; Recently spotted chatting with <STRONG>Dean<\/STRONG>.&nbsp; To announce plans for running by Sept 4.&nbsp; <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sj\/2003\/06\/20#a116\">Details<\/A>.<\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Graham<\/STRONG>\/<STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.sharptonexplore2004.com\/\">Sharpton<\/A><\/STRONG>\/<STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/www.moseley-braun.org\/\">MoseleyBraun<\/A><\/STRONG> (&#8220;gra-yum-shahrp-tun-mho-zlee-broun&#8221;)<STRONG>:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Minority candidates, all long-term politicians, two of them minorities.
