Nov. 7, 2006; via <a href=\"http:\/\/howappealing.law.com\/110706.html#019352\">Howard Bashman<\/a>)\u00a0 <em>shlep <\/em>has no position on the impending policy (and we don&#8217;t know what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidbowie.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">David Bowie<\/font><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Changes_(David_Bowie_song\">feels<\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsdepot.com\/david-bowie\/changes.html\">it<\/a>).\u00a0 We can, nonetheless,\u00a0offer a link or two for those planning to take advantage of this new policy &#8212; or others merely hoping to handle a name change without a lawyer.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">New Yorkers wanting to change the gender designation on their birth certificates will &#8220;have to have changed their name and shown that they had lived in their adopted gender for at least two years.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 They can go to the New York <em>CourtHelp<\/em> website to find forms needed to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nycourts.gov\/courts\/nyc\/civil\/pdfs\/NameChangeAdultform.pdf\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Petition for Individual Adult Change of Name<\/font><\/a>.\u00a0 In addition, the <font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tgcrossroads.org\/news\/archive.asp?aid=426\">West Village Trans-Legal Clinic<\/a>\u00a0has offered\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawhelp.org\/NY\/StateDirectoryProfile.cfm\/County\/%20\/City\/%20\/demoMode\/=%201\/Language\/1\/State\/NY\/TextOnly\/N\/ZipCode\/%20\/LoggedIn\/0\/orgID\/3381\"><em>Name Change Project<\/em><\/a>\u00a0since 2002, which assists transgendered people in obtaining legal name changes. <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><span \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"26\" alt=\"erasing\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/11\/erasingS.gif\" width=\"40\" \/>\u00a0 In addition to the <a href=\"http:\/\/nycourts.gov\/courts\/nyc\/civil\/pdfs\/NameChangeAdultform.pdf\">NYS forms<\/a>, prospective name-changers in other states can use the links found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsconline.org\/WC\/Publications\/StateLinks\/ProSeCtFormsStateLinks.htm\">NCSC State Forms<\/a> page to locate\u00a0websites\u00a0with online forms in their own states.\u00a0 \u00a0For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supreme.state.az.us\/selfserv\/formnmchg.htm\">Arizona&#8217;s Adult Name Change<\/a> forms, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courts.state.mn.us\/default.aspx?page=513&amp;category=75\">Minnesota Name Change<\/a> forms for both adults and minors.<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Finally, in California, it seems <font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">you still must have undergone gender reassignment surgery in order to request a change in the gender marker on your legal documents.\u00a0\u00a0 For help in that process, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgov.org\/site\/courts_index.asp?id=32357\">Access Center<\/a>\u00a0of the Superior Court for San Francisco County &#8220;can help you fill out the forms and make sure the affidavit from your doctor is complete.&#8221;<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City is\u00a0&#8220;moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery.&#8221;\u00a0(New York Times, &#8220;NY Plans to Make Gender Personal Choice,&#8221;
