{"id":261,"date":"2006-11-05T21:28:56","date_gmt":"2006-11-06T01:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/11\/05\/261\/"},"modified":"2006-11-05T21:35:40","modified_gmt":"2006-11-06T01:35:40","slug":"its-time-to-honor-pro-se-work-done-pro-bono","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/11\/05\/its-time-to-honor-pro-se-work-done-pro-bono\/","title":{"rendered":"it&#8217;s time to honor pro se work done pro bono"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/nlj\/\">National Law Journal<\/a><\/em> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/nlj\/PubArticleNLJ.jsp?id=1159520727587\">seeking nominations<\/a> for its 2006 Pro Bono Awards.\u00a0 <em>NLJ<\/em> notes that<em> <\/em>&#8220;Past winners include lawyers whose <em>pro bono<\/em> work has entailed significant financial sacrifice, has had a broad impact and, because of their clients&#8217; unpopularity, has exposed them to criticism.&#8221;\u00a0 <em>shlep<\/em> wants to urge <em>pro se<\/em> practitioners and advocates to nominate\u00a0worthy members\u00a0of the legal community who have made significant volunteer\u00a0efforts for the improvement and\u00a0expansion of\u00a0self-help\/<em>pro se<\/em> resources in their communities, states or nation. \u00a0 We have often argued that self-help law volunteers greatly leverage <em>pro bono<\/em> resources &#8212; either directly serving more <em>pro se<\/em> litigants per hour of service,\u00a0or indirectly helping to create\u00a0resources that are widely available &#8212; and their efferts should be encouraged and recognized.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"79\" alt=\"spotlight\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/11\/spotlight.gif\" width=\"49\" \/>\u00a0 Whether\u00a0we\u00a0spotlight\u00a0a bar leader who has fought for <em>pro se<\/em> projects and funding (often against strong &#8220;guild&#8221; opposition), a private attorney who has organized a courthouse program or helped to staff one, or an academic providing research or clinical oversight, it&#8217;s about time the self-help community let the rest of the bar know that efforts on behalf of <em>pro se<\/em> litigants are an important part of the legal profession&#8217;s <em>pro bono<\/em> contribution to public welfare.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The deadline to receive nominations is Nov. 16.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/nlj\/PubArticleNLJ.jsp?id=1159520727587\">Details here<\/a>.
