An all-too-common example is when an identity thief uses your personal information to open a credit card account in your name.&#8221; (USAFedCU <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usafedcu.org\/safety\/idtheft02.html\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">brochure<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">)\u00a0 There are many resources available online to help you deter, detect and defend against Identity Fraud, and much legislative and regulatory activity aimed at those goals, and consumer advocacy for additional protection. <\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">For example, as of today (Nov. 1, 2006), New York State residents have the power to place\u00a0a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/nysconsumer.gov\/security_freeze.htm\">security freeeze<\/a>&#8221; on their credit files which can help in\u00a0&#8220;thwarting someone from opening credit cards or lines of credit in another persons name.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 (CPB <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/nysconsumer.gov\/pressreleases\/2006\/oct312006.htm\"><font size=\"2\">press release<\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\">;\u00a0<em>Westchester Journal<\/em> <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejournalnews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20061101\/BUSINESS01\/611010324\/1066\/BUSINESS01\"><font size=\"2\">article<\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\">)\u00a0 Twenty other states have so-called Security Freeeze or Fraud Alert laws of various sorts, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumersunion.org\/campaigns\/\/learn_more\/003484indiv.html\">Consumers Union lists<\/a> the states, with brief descriptions of their laws and links.\u00a0<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">Consumers Union is also engaged right now in an <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.npsite.org\/cu\/site\/Advocacy?JServSessionIdr007=sye7yv20h2.app5a&amp;cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=1229\">election season campaign<\/a> to send messages to federal candidates asking for more financial privacy protection, including giving consumers in every state the right to place security freezes on their credit files.\u00a0\u00a0 You can find more CU information on Identity Theft protection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumersunion.org\/creditmatters\/creditmattersupdates\/001638.html\">here<\/a>, and its <em>Financial Privacy Now<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumersunion.org\/blogs\/fpn\/\">weblog here<\/a>. \u00a0<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Here are two other comprehensive sources of information to help you prevent or battle identity theft:<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"57\" alt=\"AvoidIDTheftN\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/11\/avoidIDtheftN.jpg\" width=\"100\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/edu\/microsites\/idtheft\/\"><strong>Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s Identity Theft Website<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The FTC has compiled easy to understand guides for those who think they are already victims of identity theft and for those who want to do all they can to prevent ID theft.\u00a0 <em>E.g<\/em>., hey have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/edu\/microsites\/idtheft\/consumers\/defend.html#two\">guidance<\/a> on dealing with local police in filing complaints, as well as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/conline\/pubs\/credit\/affidavit.pdf\">ID Theft Affidavit<\/a> (with instructions) to use to inform credit bureaus of your fraudulent credit activity taking p lace in your name. <\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"57\" alt=\"AvoidIDTheft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/11\/avoidIDTheft.jpg\" width=\"100\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer-action.org\/\"><strong>Consumer Action.org<\/strong><\/a>, on Oct. 26, 2006, added several ID Theft documents to its Library.\u00a0 One is <a title=\"ID Theft &amp; Account Fraud\" href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer-action.org\/english\/articles\/id_theft_account_fraud\/\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">ID Theft &amp; Account Fraud <em>Prevention and Clean Up<\/em><\/font><\/font><\/a>, which &#8220;can help you take steps to prevent ID theft, or if you are a victim, to clear up the problems created by ID theft and to lessen its impact on your life.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer-action.org\/spanish\/articles\/id_theft_account_fraud_sp\/\">Spanish version<\/a>)\u00a0 Another is a 24-page <a title=\"ID Theft &amp; Account Fraud Leader\u2019s Guide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer-action.org\/english\/articles\/id_theft_account_fraud_leaders_guide\/\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">Leader\u2019s Guide <em>Strategies for Prevention and Clean Up<\/em><\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/a>, which is &#8220;written in question-and-answer format to help you anticipate frequently asked questions about ID theft and account fraud&#8221;
