{"id":208,"date":"2006-10-18T14:23:07","date_gmt":"2006-10-18T18:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/10\/18\/kane-county-il-courts-get-a-self-help-c"},"modified":"2006-10-18T19:28:53","modified_gmt":"2006-10-18T23:28:53","slug":"kane-county-il-courts-get-a-self-help-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/10\/18\/kane-county-il-courts-get-a-self-help-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Kane County (IL) gets a court self-help center"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The 450,000 residents of <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.co.kane.il.us\/communities.asp\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Kane County<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, Illinois, now have a <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/kane.illinoislegalaid.org\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><strong>Self-Help Center<\/strong><\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> for their use and assistance, located at the Judiciary Center&#8217;s <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.co.kane.il.us\/lawlibrary.asp\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Law Library<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, in St. Charles, IL.\u00a0 (<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/kane.illinoislegalaid.org\/splashPages\/pdf\/kane_pr_english.pdf\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">press release<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">)\u00a0 The website is easy to navigate, with helpful materials, such as those prepared for <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.illinoislegalaid.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.dsp_content&amp;contentID=5167\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">small claims petitioners<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> and <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.illinoislegalaid.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.dsp_content&amp;contentID=5164\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">respondents<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">.\u00a0 What strikes me most about this Self-Help Center is the participation of so many &#8220;stakeholders&#8221; &#8212; from the judiciary&#8217;s administrators and judges, and the law library staff, to local Legal Aid, the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kanebar.org\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Kane County Bar Association<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, and other civic groups.\u00a0 According to Law Librarian Halle Mikyska, &#8220;The library was able to launch the center through a $43,000 grant it received in January from the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation&#8221; Oct. 18, 2006)<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The Center&#8217;s\u00a0<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/kane.illinoislegalaid.org\/splashPages\/pdf\/kane_pr_english.pdf\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">goals<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> should be adopted in courthouses, libraries\u00a0and legal communities across the nation: &#8220;to better serve the needs of pro-se litigants;
