{"id":165,"date":"2006-10-03T10:09:58","date_gmt":"2006-10-03T14:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/10\/03\/an-intro-to-document-assembly-online\/"},"modified":"2006-10-05T12:19:29","modified_gmt":"2006-10-05T16:19:29","slug":"an-intro-to-document-assembly-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/10\/03\/an-intro-to-document-assembly-online\/","title":{"rendered":"an intro to Document Assembly Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Most lawyers (including myself) basically view computers and internet-based interaction as forms of digital magic.\u00a0 Last week, Kate Bladow of Montana Legal Services referred me to an article that can help demystify one very important element in the self-help law movement and the campaign to increase the access to justice &#8212; the creation of documents online.\u00a0 The article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ejustice.org\/articles\/2005\/12\/doing-documents-online\"><strong>Doing Documents Online<\/strong><\/a>,&#8221;<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ejustice.org\/\">eJustice<\/a>, <\/em>Dec. 8, 2005), is written by Marc Lauritsen, founder and president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capstonepractice.com\/\">Capstone Practice Systems<\/a>, who has worked in legal technology since 1984, and served as director of clinical programs at Harvard Law School. <\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The article begins: &#8221; Automated document preparation has long held great promise for expanding access to justice. We now have good reasons to expect the promise to be redeemed.&#8221;\u00a0 Marc goes on to provide a brief\u00a0 background and history of automated document assembly; explain the different kinds of\u00a0document systems (<em>e.g.<\/em>, information gathering vs. document generation;\u00a0products for\u00a0self-helpers vs. advocate\u00a0vs. developers); tell\u00a0how\u00a0&#8220;The World Wide Web opens up new opportunities for organizing and delivering document assembly applications&#8221;; and describe the (amazing) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/npado.org\/\">National Public ADO<\/a><\/em> (Automated Documents Online, or NPADO),\u00a0&#8220;a proven facility for delivering interactive interviews and document generation to self-represented individuals and advocates alike, from a web-connected browser, anywhere and anytime, using industry-standard software&#8221; &#8212; <em>for free!<\/em> <\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Marc ends the piece with a call to action, and with an image of the future:<\/font><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Surely many legal problems call for the dedicated attention of an experienced advocate. Surely many people are not willing or able to solve their own legal needs through a computer. But many problems can be addressed and many people can be served that way. Let us save our scarce human advocates for those who cannot help themselves otherwise. And let us equip our advocates with the tools to be as effective as possible.<\/font>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Imagine a world in which all the legal forms and associated know-how that anyone cares to computerize and give away can be consolidated and delivered to low-income people for free. Imagine tens of thousands of intelligent legal forms being accessed by millions of such people and their advocates on a regular basis.
