{"id":59,"date":"2006-08-23T01:27:25","date_gmt":"2006-08-23T05:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/getting-self-help-help\/"},"modified":"2006-08-23T09:36:16","modified_gmt":"2006-08-23T13:36:16","slug":"getting-self-help-help","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/shlep\/getting-self-help-help\/","title":{"rendered":"getting self-help help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">If you&#8217;ve decided that you want to try to solve a legal problem without\u00a0using a lawyer, to\u00a0learn about an area of the law before deciding whether to hire a lawyer to work on all or part of\u00a0an issue or case, or simply to be a better-informed client, there are a lot of resources available to assist you in your task &#8212; online, at courthouses and libraries, or in book stores.\u00a0\u00a0Several organizations have already compiled very good lists of self-help resources and other information on the law (see, for example, the websites that we have listed in the <em>Self-Help Gateways<\/em> section of\u00a0our <em>SHLEP<\/em>\u00a0SideBar).<\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Below, we list websites that can get you directly to Self-Help or <em>Pro Se<\/em> centers in your particular state (usually court-based resources), or help you find other forms of legal information that are likely to be helpful to self-represented litigants or do-it-yourself legal problem solvers.\u00a0Then, we&#8217;ll link to a few of the best online Self-Help Centers, and mention a couple books that might help you to choose wisely, if you plan to invest time and\/or money on self-help publications. <\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"26\" alt=\"red check\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/08\/red%20check%20smaller.gif\" width=\"30\" \/>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfhelpsupport.org\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">SelfHelpSupport<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/em><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">.org is primarily focused on\u00a0helping <em>pro se<\/em> practitioners better serve self-repesented individuals.\u00a0 Nonetheless, it has accumlated a\u00a0lot of information\u00a0for the consumer who is\u00a0trying to &#8220;self-represent&#8221; in court or to solve other routine legal problems himself or herself.\u00a0\u00a0 Their main page of <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfhelpsupport.org\/resourcesforselfrepresent378.cfm\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Resources for the Self-Represented Litigants<\/font><\/strong><\/a><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"> has grouped information and links in\u00a0five categories:\u00a0 Legal Aid Services, Online Legal Information, Court Forms, Self-Help Centers and State Court Websites. <\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">. . . . .<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. . . . .The <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfhelpsupport.org\/resourcesforselfrepresent378.cfm#_State_Court_Websites\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">State Court Websites<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0link will allow you to quickly find out what resources are available online from your state&#8217;s judiciary.\u00a0 SHS says &#8220;Often the website of the court where your case is being tried is the best place to begin a search for self help programs and court forms.&#8221;<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. . . . . It offers much information and has over 400 court forms available online,\u00a0covering domestic violence, family law, guardianship, estate, dependency, small claims, and tax appeal. <\/font><\/div>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8211;\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtinfo.ca.gov\/selfhelp\/\"><strong>California Courts Self-Help Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is thorough and user-friendly,\u00a0with extensive help for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtinfo.ca.gov\/selfhelp\/smallclaims\/\">Small Claims<\/a> litigants and parties in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtinfo.ca.gov\/selfhelp\/family\/\">Family Court<\/a> matters, a good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtinfo.ca.gov\/selfhelp\/glossary.htm\">Glossary<\/a> of legal\u00a0terms, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.247ref.org\/portal\/access_law3.cfm\">Ask a Librarian<\/a> services, and much more. \u00a0<\/font><\/div>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8211;\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/wicourts.gov\/services\/public\/selfhelp\/index.htm\"><strong>Wisconsin<\/strong> Court System Self-Help Center<\/a> doesn&#8217;t have a lot of whistles, buttons or bells, but it is straightforward, easy to use and understand, and has a lot of information. <\/font><\/div>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8211;\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flcourts.org\/gen_public\/family\/self_help\/index.shtml\"><strong>Florida<\/strong> State Courts Self-Help<\/a> Program focuses on Family Court matters (<em>e.g<\/em>., divorce, custody, child support, paternity); many f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flcourts.org\/gen_public\/family\/forms_rules\/index.shtml\">orms<\/a> have been created with the pro se litigant in mind, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flcourts.org\/gen_public\/family\/self_help\/map.shtml\">local<\/a> self-help\u00a0centers provide a variety of onsite services.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"40\" alt=\"sleuth\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/files\/2006\/08\/sleuthSm.gif\" width=\"50\" \/>\u00a0 <strong>Don&#8217;t forget<\/strong> (as we\u00a0explained in <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\/2006\/08\/22\/trust-your-online-virtual-reference-librarian\/\">this post<\/a>), you can get\u00a0useful and trustworthy help with your legal research and problem-solving from the <strong>reference librarians<\/strong> at public law libraries or your local public library.\u00a0 You can do it in person, by email, and even through Virtual\/Chat Reference services.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><strong>. . . . What About Books?<\/strong><\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">There are many sources of legal self-help publications.\u00a0<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nolo.com\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Nolo.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> and the legal reform group <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.halt.org\/self_help_resources\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">HALT<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> have been leaders in the self-help movement and are both known for quality products.\u00a0 HALT has put together a group of <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.halt.org\/self_help_resources\/special_offers\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Do-It-Yourself Best Buys<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, and has also published a volume entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.halt.org\/self_help_resources\/books\/details.php?ID=8\">Do-It-Yourself Law: HALT\u2019s Guide to Self-Help Books, Kits &amp; Software<\/a><\/em> (2006, 189 pp.), which reviews the most popular self-help legal products on the market and identifies the best and worst in eight legal areas including property law, family law, taxes and small business.\u00a0 <\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><a title=\"LAW FOR THE LAYPERSON 3rd Edition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wshein.com\/Catalog\/Product.aspx?sku=3041\"><font face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><em>Law for the Layperson<\/em><\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (3rd Edition, 2006, 485 pp.), by <font color=\"#000000\">Murley, Diane<\/font> and <font color=\"#000000\">Hewette, Amber<\/font> is far more comprehensive (and expensive).\u00a0 It reviews hundreds of books, pamphlets and articles which seek to help non-lawyers help themselves, and can help the layperson determine which of these sources is best suited for their particular need.\u00a0 You may be able to locate a copy of this reference volume at your local public library or law library.<\/font><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><strong>. . . .
