{"id":110,"date":"2009-07-10T13:51:14","date_gmt":"2009-07-10T17:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/scotthartley\/?p=110"},"modified":"2009-07-10T13:53:51","modified_gmt":"2009-07-10T17:53:51","slug":"china-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/scotthartley\/2009\/07\/10\/china-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Half-Way to McDonalds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If Tencent&#8217;s goal is to equal McDonald&#8217;s, in having served 1 Billion (hamburgers), then they&#8217;re half way there with over 570 Million registered QQ Instant Messaging (IM) accounts.\u00a0 Founded in 1998, Tencent has more than 2x the number of Facebook users, and 20x the number on Twitter.\u00a0 Yet no one in the West has heard of them, and only in January did they launch an English version of their MSN-esq web-portal website, IMQQ.com.\u00a0 As I highlighted in my &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/idblog\/2009\/07\/09\/micro-blogging-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">Micro-Blogging in China<\/a>&#8221; post yesterday on Harvard&#8217;s Internet &amp; Democracy blog, Western media focus on Chinese access to Facebook and Twitter is only noteworthy to the extent that such services are used both domestically in contentious regions, and followed outside of such regions.\u00a0 As outlined in their study, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/publications\/2009\/Mapping_the_Arabic_Blogosphere\" target=\"_blank\">Mapping the Arabic Blogosphere<\/a>,&#8221; Bruce Etling, John Palfrey, and John Kelly of Morningside Analytics discuss the importance of &#8220;Bridge Bloggers&#8221; in the Levant and Maghreb who transcend linguistic divides.\u00a0 In the same way, continuous Chinese access to Twitter is only necessary insofar that Twitter provides a bridge platform that some users on both sides of the Chinese Firewall pay attention to.\u00a0 Today Twitter is a politically transcendent bridge, and for that it&#8217;s useful.
