Though his life was tragically short, Charles Henry Bennett, is considered one of the pioneers of\u00a0 comic illustration.\u00a0 One can find his witty illustrations and caricatures peppered throughout Punch<\/em>, The Comic Times<\/em>,\u00a0 and other popular periodicals of the 1850s and 1860s.\u00a0 In addition to periodicals,\u00a0 he also authored and illustrated several children’s books.\u00a0 In 1856, Bennett published a book titled, Shadows<\/em>, based on 24 of his humorous color prints portraying assorted characters in Victorian society.\u00a0\u00a0 Each print depicts an individual silently stalked by an amusing shadow revealing his\/her “true” or underlying character.\u00a0\u00a0 These comic illustrations were very popular and reprinted repeatedly over time in various publications.\u00a0 Though widely respected in the profession for his inventiveness and technique,\u00a0 Bennett died in complete poverty at the early age of 37.\u00a0 Shortly after his death, John Tenniel, noted “Alice in Wonderland”\u00a0 illustrator, and several other of Charles Bennett’s admirers held a benefit<\/a> to aid his widow and children.<\/p>\n
