{"id":224,"date":"2011-06-08T10:05:51","date_gmt":"2011-06-08T14:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/preserving\/?p=224"},"modified":"2012-05-01T15:31:12","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T19:31:12","slug":"the-home-aquarium-craze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/preserving\/2011\/06\/08\/the-home-aquarium-craze\/","title":{"rendered":"The Home Aquarium Craze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1853, when the London Zoo unveiled the first large public &#8220;fish tank&#8221; or &#8220;Aquatic Vivarium&#8221;, as it was known at the time, it offered millions of people the opportunity to view fascinating aquatic life up close.\u00a0 It was Philip Henry Gosse, an\u00a0 English naturalist, who was the first person to introduce and popularize\u00a0 the term &#8220;aquarium&#8221;. In 1854, Gosse published his book, <em>The Aquarium<\/em>, which sold extremely well and can be credited with\u00a0setting\u00a0 off the Victorian craze for household aquariums.\u00a0Americans were soon on-board and just as passionate about this new hobby.\u00a0 In 1858, Henry D. Butler published the first popular instruction manual for constructing and maintaining a family aquarium.\u00a0 Butler&#8217;s book states.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Aquarium has become, within a short period, almost a <\/em><br \/>\n<em> necessary luxury in every well-appointed household, both of <\/em><br \/>\n<em> Europe and America. It has wholly superseded the old <\/em><br \/>\n<em> fashioned fish-globe in the popular affection.
