Excerpts from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/19\/international\/africa\/19africa.html?oref=login\">Times<\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">In an implicit but devastating account of the havoc AIDS is causing<br \/>\nhere, South Africa&#8217;s government reported Friday that annual deaths<br \/>\nincreased 57 percent from 1997 to 2003, with common AIDS-related<br \/>\ndiseases like tuberculosis and pneumonia fueling much of the rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">The report, by the government agency Statistics South Africa, caused<br \/>\ncontention even before its release, which came more than a month after<br \/>\nthe originally scheduled date. Critics charged &#8211; and the agency denied<br \/>\n&#8211; that the delay was because of political pressure from President Thabo<br \/>\nMbeki&#8217;s government, which they say has long played down the dimensions<br \/>\nof the AIDS crisis here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Mr. Mbeki&#8217;s office sharply rebuked the agency in 2001 after it reported<br \/>\nthat 4 in 10 deaths among working-age adults probably resulted from<br \/>\nAIDS, saying that statisticians could not prove their conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">The report states that 499,000 of South Africa&#8217;s roughly 44 million<br \/>\npeople died in 2002, up sharply from 318,000 in 1997.
