{"id":654,"date":"2018-07-23T19:28:01","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T19:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/perma\/?p=654"},"modified":"2018-07-23T19:42:11","modified_gmt":"2018-07-23T19:42:11","slug":"aall-2018-lil-goes-to-baltimore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/perma\/2018\/07\/23\/aall-2018-lil-goes-to-baltimore\/","title":{"rendered":"AALL 2018: LIL goes to Baltimore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last weekend members of the LIL team traveled to Baltimore for the annual gathering of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aallnet.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Association of Law Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (AALL). Armed with our new business cards (thanks Anastasia) and freshly pressed buttons (thanks LILterns) Brett, Adam and I were ready to attend sessions, catch up with colleagues and hit the exhibit hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/perma\/files\/2018\/07\/interns_buttons.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-655 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/perma\/files\/2018\/07\/interns_buttons.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We kicked the weekend off with a keynote speech from Baltimore\u2019s own John Waters, author and director of boundary-pushing cult films such as \u201cHairspray\u201d and \u201cPink Flamingos\u201d.\u00a0Beyond his connection to the conference&#8217;s host city, his appearance seemed at first to be an odd fit. However, as he pointed out, \u201clibrarians are brave, smart and sometimes pissed off&#8230;and they stand up for people who get overlooked\u201d &#8211; all qualities he tries to get at in his movies. His thoughts on access to books for prisoners, the risks of censorship, and equality got everyone ready for the next couple of days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our friends at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lipalliance.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LIPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> once again generously shared their exhibit hall table with the LIL team, for which we\u2019re exceedingly grateful. It was great to work alongside Margie Maes, champion of LIL and Executive Director of LIPA who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lipalliance.org\/2018\/07\/19\/congratulations-margie-and-welcome-michelle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will be retiring this month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Congratulations, Margie! We will miss her, but were also thrilled to meet her successor, Michelle as well. We\u2019ve been rooted in our home of an academic law library &#8211; but<\/span><b> we are seeking input and thoughts about linkrot in other industries and contexts. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We want to know: <\/span><b>Who<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> thinks linkrot is a problem for the flow of information and citation? What is their\u00a0<\/span><b>job<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">? What kind of content is <\/span><b>especially susceptible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the dreaded 404 error? <\/span><b>At what points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the creation of the content are citations and links added? Whose <\/span><b>responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is that? Are you seeing <\/span><b>solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to this problem? Email us!
