{"id":518,"date":"2011-03-28T23:48:53","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T03:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/niftyc\/?p=518"},"modified":"2011-07-29T22:58:07","modified_gmt":"2011-07-30T02:58:07","slug":"a-one-day-port-35-days-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/niftyc\/archives\/518","title":{"rendered":"A one day port, 35 days later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(or, <strong><em>More About Comcast<\/em><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>My telephone number port came through from Comcast today. \u00a0This is the number port I&#8217;ve been railing about for weeks in this <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/h6Uu2X\">previous and increasingly-lengthy blog post<\/a>. \u00a0According to the <strong>FCC&#8217;s one-day porting rule<\/strong> (which you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/cib\/consumerfacts\/numbport.html\">read about here<\/a>), a port like this should take&#8230; you guessed it&#8230; <strong>one day<\/strong>. \u00a0Let&#8217;s see how that measures up to some other units of measure.<\/p>\n<p>Since I ordered the service on February 21 and it is now March 28, <strong>one &#8220;FCC day&#8221; actually equals<\/strong> 5 weeks or 25 business days or <strong>35 real life actual honest days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I also discovered a new unit of measure I will call a &#8220;<strong>Comcast Day<\/strong>.&#8221; Here is an explanation of what a &#8220;business day&#8221; means in number portability, according to a Comcast supervisor (paraphrased as closely as possible) reached by telephone. \u00a0I am quoting <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/h6Uu2X\">my earlier blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>three business days equals 72 hours but that these are &#8220;business hours&#8221; and not regular hours. Since we know that there are 8 business hours in a work day, that actually works out to 9 business days. \u00a0So&#8230; maybe by April 1?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since it is not April 1, thankfully we know that <strong>Comcast days&#8211;just like the rest of their offerings&#8211;do not correspond to reality<\/strong> in this instance (thank goodness). \u00a0But for the sake of scientific curiosity, I&#8217;d like to convert 35 days into &#8220;Comcast days.&#8221; \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure how, it is surprisingly complicated because the definition employs &#8220;business&#8221; in multiple contradictory ways.<\/p>\n<p>I guess it would be 35 days * 24 hours a day \/ 8 &#8220;business hours&#8221; * 5\/7ths (to get just the weekdays).
