He&#8217;s smart, but he&#8217;s entirely wrong in <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.scripting.com\/2004\/02\/22#When:2:24:53PM\">this entry<\/a>.  It&#8217;s too bad, because he&#8217;s often quite perceptive and pithy in his thoughts on politics<\/p>\n<p>We live in a two-party system, which is not just an archival feature of the power of the two parties.  Because it&#8217;s a winner-take-all (as opposed to PR), federal, separated executive-legislative system, third parties face massive structural impediments to being &#8220;viable.&#8221;  If you want third parties with any power or influence, you need a parliamentary system, at the very least.  Which ain&#8217;t gonna happen in this country anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written about this before, and it might help to review <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/natep\/2004\/02\/02#a233\">my entry on the median voter theorem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Tyler wrote about this a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentkid.com\/archive\/2004_02_15_bent_arch.html#107733468628663108\">couple of days ago<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentkid.com\/archive\/2004_02_22_bent_arch.html#107747462330225616\">continues to write about it now<\/a>.
