{"id":1317,"date":"2003-08-25T11:42:00","date_gmt":"2003-08-25T15:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/nateptest\/2003\/08\/25\/good-suggestions\/"},"modified":"2003-08-25T11:42:00","modified_gmt":"2003-08-25T15:42:00","slug":"good-suggestions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/natep\/2003\/08\/25\/good-suggestions\/","title":{"rendered":"Good suggestions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a97'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>O.K.&nbsp; Some of you have come up with good ideas about adjusting to Boston.<\/p>\n<p>When you mention &#8220;culture,&#8221; what sort of culture are we talking about<br \/>\nhere?&nbsp; I can see the history (and though it&#8217;s not my period, it&#8217;s<br \/>\nstill fun, as long as the person you&#8217;re with doesn&#8217;t go on and on about<br \/>\nhow all of America started here and we have New England to thank for<br \/>\nfreedom, Mom, and apple pie [BTW, BF rarely, if ever, does this] &#8212; I<br \/>\nhave some people in various parts of the country that used to be Mexico<br \/>\nor France who&#8217;d object vociferously to the &#8220;this is the origins of it<br \/>\nall&#8221; line), but besides the good classical music and the MFA, I&#8217;m<br \/>\nbereft in knowing about the culture that&#8217;s here.&nbsp; The Lonely<br \/>\nPlanet guide doesn&#8217;t do much to point it out.<\/p>\n<p>Brief caveat: I will not spend time in the bars of Allston and<br \/>\nBrighton.&nbsp; They always look too much like a whole town full of the<br \/>\nbars I spent time in during college (but we only had 5 bars in a town<br \/>\nwith 20,000 college students, so you can imagine), but which I made a<br \/>\npoint even then to avoid at night&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>(I could make a jab about Dunkin&#8217; Donuts in here, but considering that<br \/>\nI grew up in a land of strip malls, that&#8217;s a bit unfair.&nbsp; But<br \/>\npurple and orange?&nbsp; Who chose the color scheme?&nbsp; The &#8220;Queer<br \/>\nEye&#8221; guys would NOT approve, nor would Martha&#8230;.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><br \/>\nDo other people have suggestions?&nbsp; How else can the displaced come<br \/>\nto love Boston?&nbsp; O.K.&nbsp; &#8220;Love&#8221; is probably a bit<br \/>\noptimistic.&nbsp; How about &#8220;like&#8221;?&nbsp; Or &#8220;get along with&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And how do I keep the cars out there on the road from trying to run me<br \/>\nover or yelling some conjugation of &#8220;fuck&#8221; at me when I am riding my<br \/>\nbike?&nbsp; (This, I realize, is a totally separate question, but it<br \/>\nseems slightly related.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>O.K.&nbsp; Some of you have come up with good ideas about adjusting to Boston.
