{"id":1223,"date":"2005-11-04T08:22:45","date_gmt":"2005-11-04T12:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/nateptest\/2005\/11\/04\/catholic-brainpower-firepower\/"},"modified":"2005-11-04T08:22:45","modified_gmt":"2005-11-04T12:22:45","slug":"catholic-brainpower-firepower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/natep\/2005\/11\/04\/catholic-brainpower-firepower\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic brainpower firepower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1133'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/doc.mhtml?i=20051114&amp;s=trb111405\">TNR Online discusses the Catholic intellectual backing of the evangelical movement in America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s<br \/>\na bargain of the devil oyu don&#8217;t know here.&nbsp; For Catholics of a<br \/>\ncertain bent (they&#8217;d refer to themselves as &#8220;orthodox&#8221;, although by<br \/>\nthat term they indicate that they prefer the theology of the<br \/>\npost-Reformation over that of the patristics and the unified church of<br \/>\nthe first millennium [in general]), the agreement means that they get<br \/>\nfootsoldiers for the culture wars.&nbsp; Evangelicals get a language<br \/>\nthat doesn&#8217;t require the quoting of a scripture and interpretation that<br \/>\nfew people are willing to accept.<\/p>\n<p>But for each side, there&#8217;s a danger.&nbsp; Both sides don&#8217;t really<br \/>\nthink that the other is of the same faith community and therefore not<br \/>\nfuly Christian.&nbsp; For the Catholics, those of the conservative bent<br \/>\nwould say that the true church can only be found most fully in that<br \/>\nwhich is in communion with the bishop of Rome; that is, Protestants are<br \/>\npart of a church that is a church, but a defective one.&nbsp; For<br \/>\nevangelicals, the tradition of referring to &#8220;Christians and Catholics&#8221;<br \/>\nis a long one, and one which I heard used even as recently as this week<br \/>\nin my department.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a tenuous alliance and one which exists mostly for expediency, I<br \/>\nthink.&nbsp; And perhaps one way to decrease the power of the religious<br \/>\nright is to separate evangelical muscle from Catholic minds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TNR Online discusses the Catholic intellectual backing of the evangelical movement in America.
