{"id":1182,"date":"2005-05-05T10:45:02","date_gmt":"2005-05-05T14:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/nateptest\/2005\/05\/05\/strange-confluence\/"},"modified":"2005-05-05T10:45:02","modified_gmt":"2005-05-05T14:45:02","slug":"strange-confluence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/natep\/2005\/05\/05\/strange-confluence\/","title":{"rendered":"Strange confluence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1025'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today is three holidays in one.<\/p>\n<p>You can guess the first one easily.&nbsp; It&#8217;s Cinco de Mayo, to<br \/>\ncommemorate the Mexican victory over the French occupiers of Mexico at<br \/>\nthe Battle of Puebla.&nbsp; More info <a href=\"http:\/\/latino.sscnet.ucla.edu\/cinco.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacnet.org\/assunta\/spa5may.htm\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mexonline.com\/cinco.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also Ascension day for Latin Christians, commemorating the<br \/>\nAscension of Christ into Heaven 40 days after the Resurrection on<br \/>\nEaster.&nbsp; (The Orthodox just celebrated Easter last Sunday, so it&#8217;s<br \/>\nnot Ascension Day for them.)&nbsp; It comes 10 days before Pentecost,<br \/>\nwhich commemorates the coming of the Third Person of the Trinity, the<br \/>\nHoly Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also Karl Marx&#8217;s birthday.&nbsp; You know about Karl.&nbsp; I<br \/>\nthink Karl&#8217;s fantastically intelligent and interesting.&nbsp; If you&#8217;re<br \/>\nlooking for something to read, I&#8217;d suggest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/archive\/marx\/works\/1844\/jewish-question\/\">&#8220;On the Jewish Question.&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis is perhaps the most succinct, insightful, and laser-like critique<br \/>\nof liberalism ever written.&nbsp; Although I buy liberalism in general,<br \/>\nMarx&#8217;s points about the failures of liberalism are absolutely necessary<br \/>\nto consider.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also Yom Ha&#8217;shoah, the day of remembrance for the Jewish Holocaust<br \/>\nof World War II.&nbsp; It&#8217;s also a day to remember the other victims of<br \/>\nthe Nazis (homosexuals, the mentally and physically handicapped,<br \/>\ngypsies, and others) and the victims of other genocides in<br \/>\nhistory.&nbsp; &#8220;Rest eternal grant unto them.&nbsp; Let light perpetual<br \/>\nshine on them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A very strange coincidence of holidays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is three holidays in one.
