{"id":1173,"date":"2005-04-19T20:05:08","date_gmt":"2005-04-20T00:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/nateptest\/2005\/04\/19\/habemus-papam\/"},"modified":"2005-04-19T20:05:08","modified_gmt":"2005-04-20T00:05:08","slug":"habemus-papam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/natep\/2005\/04\/19\/habemus-papam\/","title":{"rendered":"Habemus papam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a990'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As everyone knows by now, we have a new pope.<\/p>\n<p>The head bishop of the American Church <a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/3577_61402_ENG_HTM.htm?menu=undefined\">fired a shot across the bow<\/a>,<br \/>\nsaying, &#8220;I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide him in his words and<br \/>\nhis actions and that he may become a focus of unity and a minister of<br \/>\nreconciliation in a church and a world in which faithfulness and truth<br \/>\nwear many faces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is, Truth is not held solely within the Roman Catholic Church and<br \/>\nthe interpretation of that faith that Benedict XVI holds.&nbsp;<br \/>\n(Benedict has become well-known for his claim that the full Truth of<br \/>\nthe<br \/>\nGospel is found only in Roman Catholic Christianity and that other<br \/>\nforms of Christianity and religion are &#8220;deficient.&#8221;) Truth belongs to<br \/>\nGod, and we are at best imperfect custodians of that Truth, prone to<br \/>\nerror even in noting where that truth may lie.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archbishopofcanterbury.org\/releases\/050419a.htm\">Rowan Cantuar is a bit more hopeful &#8212; or politic<\/a>: &#8220;His election is also of great significance<br \/>\n          to Christians everywhere. I look forward to meeting him and working<br \/>\n          together to build on the legacy<br \/>\n        of his predecessor, as we seek to promote shared understanding between<br \/>\n        our churches in the service of the Gospel and the goal of Christian unity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All the Protestant conservatives who will hold this election of a<br \/>\nconservative pope as a sign of great things need to remember that he<br \/>\nthinks their faith problematic, incomplete, and at least in part, in<br \/>\nError.&nbsp;&nbsp; Pause before rejoicing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As everyone knows by now, we have a new pope.
