{"id":1149,"date":"2005-02-18T17:27:18","date_gmt":"2005-02-18T21:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/nateptest\/2005\/02\/18\/in-need-of-education\/"},"modified":"2005-02-18T17:27:18","modified_gmt":"2005-02-18T21:27:18","slug":"in-need-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/natep\/2005\/02\/18\/in-need-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"In need of education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a937'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve (BF and I) been interviewing for positions in the undergrad<br \/>\nresidences here at Harvard over the last week.&nbsp; Each interview is<br \/>\nabout half an hour, and the questions are generally pretty standard.<\/p>\n<p>But there are a few curveballs here and there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;If you could choose any picture of yourself to display on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefacebook.com\">The Facebook<\/a>, which would it be and why?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>A set of questions in Spanish (because I indicated I had studied for about five years in secondary school and college)<\/li>\n<li>BF<br \/>\ngot asked if he spoke any Irish (possibly because his three names are<br \/>\nall stereotypical Irish ones, e.g., Brendan Sean O&#8217;Donovan [which are<br \/>\nnot his names])\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And then there was the question, which in essence asked what we<br \/>\nwould do if we encountered people in the house who might not like us<br \/>\nbecause of the fact that we&#8217;re gay.&nbsp; The question concerned me for<br \/>\ntwo reasons.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>First, it implies\/forgets\/lacks knowledge of the fact that that&#8217;s a<br \/>\ndaily part of both of our lives, probably in larger ways that the<br \/>\nquestioner imagined.&nbsp; BF responded essentially by saying that he&#8217;s<br \/>\nRoman Catholic, and he runs into it all the time.&nbsp; I did not<br \/>\nmention the fact that my family and I do not have good relations, due<br \/>\nto the fact that I&#8217;m queer.<\/p>\n<p>Second, although I am not trying to equate the queer push for civil<br \/>\nrights with that of various racial and ethnic groups (not because I<br \/>\nthink there&#8217;s necessarily a difference in magnitude but because I just<br \/>\nam not sure how comparable they are), one wonders whether the<br \/>\nquestioner would have asked it if we substituted most other minority<br \/>\ngroups in the sentence.&nbsp; My guess is &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve (BF and I) been interviewing for positions in the undergrad residences here at Harvard over the last week.&nbsp; Each interview is about half an hour, and the questions are generally pretty standard.
