Letter from Munich – the Joseph Affair \u2013 301<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dusseldorf, 2 February 2007<\/p>\n

Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,<\/p>\n

\u201cReasonable people,\u201d said Erich, \u201chave always supported the idea that corruption, limited civil rights, turning minorities into scapegoats \u2013 all that is acceptable as long as we can live untroubled lives in a society where order rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of us were giving him skeptical looks, but Erich seemed not to notice. \u201cAustria\u2019s Joerg Haider publicly makes a shockingly anti-Semitic remark about the head of Vienna\u2019s Jewish community and weeks go by before the Austrian Chancellor finally meekly contradicts him. Chancellor Schuessel is certainly not going to offend the leading politician in the other party making up his own government coalition. The Chancellor knows \u2013 as European politicians knew sixty-five years ago \u2013 that one must accommodate oneself to such people \u2013 and to parties like Haider\u2019s, which one of its own members recently referred to quite happily as \u2018brown\u2019 (the color used in Europe to designate right-wing extremist and Nazi parties). The Chancellor is a reasonable man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone was silent. \u201cAnd in Germany, of course, politicians like former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, together with German state prime ministers Roland Koch, Kurt Biedenkopf, and Edmund Stoiber, all members of the same political union, can be involved in any amount of corruption, and no one cares, as long as they produce explanations that are not too laughably implausible and as long as they just make sure that everything in the country or in their state is orderly. That\u2019s all people really care about. That\u2019s all even the Americans care about, just as long as people like Avi Primor, former Israeli ambassador to Germany, keep reassuring them that things are really all right in central Europe these days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in Sebnitz?\u201d someone asked.<\/p>\n

Erich laughed at the mention of the town where the boy Joseph had died, in a case where the parents had accused a group of neo-Nazis of murder. \u201cSebnitz?\u201d he almost sneered. \u201cSebnitz? Nobody remembers Sebnitz, my friend. And the authorities in Sebnitz \u2013 the mayor and the police there \u2013 and the authorities in Dresden have managed to completely isolate the parents. And in their isolation they been turned into a couple of jabbering paranoids that nobody will ever believe. They rant on that skinheads openly give them the Nazi salute in broad daylight, that they are publicly insulted, that they still receive death threats, that their daughter is harassed in school, and that their own lawyer has accepted a fee of fifteen thousand dollars from the state chancellery, from the very government he is supposed to be protecting them from \u2013 and it\u2019s all true \u2013 but we have managed to destroy the parents\u2019 credibility and perhaps even their sanity so completely that no one will ever believe them.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled with satisfaction. \u201cIn Berlin today, the social democrats may control the federal government, but it is we, my friends, who control Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n

I left. I didn\u2019t want him to have any further opportunity to call me one of his \u201cfriends.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Wiederver\u00f6ffentlichung eines fr\u00fcheren Briefes)<\/p>\n

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,<\/p>\n

\u201eVern\u00fcnftige Leute\u201c, sagte Erich, \u201ehaben immer den Gedanken bef\u00fcrwortet, dass Korruption, eingeschr\u00e4nkte Menschenrechte und der Versuch, bestimmte Menschen in S\u00fcndenb\u00f6cke umzuwandeln \u2013 dass all das akzeptabel ist, solange wir angenehme Leben f\u00fchren k\u00f6nnen, in einer Gesellschaft, wo die Ordnung vorherrscht\u201c.<\/p>\n

Viele von uns schauten ihn skeptisch an, aber es schien, dass Erich es nicht bemerkte. \u201eJ\u00f6rg Haider macht eine schockierend antisemitische Bemerkung \u00fcber den Leiter der j\u00fcdischen Gesellschaft in Wien und erst nach mehreren Wochen sagt Bundeskanzler Sch\u00fcssel endlich ein lahmes Widerwort gegen den starken Mann der FP\u00d6. Sch\u00fcssel wei\u00df \u2013 genauso wie die europ\u00e4ischen Politiker von vor f\u00fcnfundsechzig Jahren es wussten \u2013 dass man sich solchen Leuten gef\u00e4llig erweisen m\u00fcssen. Man muss sich auch Parteien wie der FP\u00d6 gef\u00e4llig erweisen, obwohl selbst Mitglieder dieser Partei sie als braun gern bezeichnet. Bundeskanzler Sch\u00fcssel ist ein vern\u00fcnftiger Mann\u201c.<\/p>\n

Alle schwiegen. \u201eUnd nat\u00fcrlich in Deutschland k\u00f6nnen Politiker wie Helmut Kohl, Roland Koch, Kurt Biedenkopf und Edmund Stoiber in alle Art Korruption verwickelt werden, und es ist allen egal, solange diese Herren Erkl\u00e4rungen vorlegen k\u00f6nnen, die nicht zu l\u00e4cherlich unglaubw\u00fcrdig sind und solange sie zusehen, dass alles im Land ordentlich ist. Das ist das Einzige, das f\u00fcr die meisten Leute wichtig ist. Sogar in Amerika ist das das Einzige, das f\u00fcr die Bev\u00f6lkerung wichtig ist, solange Leute wie Avi Primor, der ehemalige israelische Botschafter in Deutschland, sie dauernd aufs Neue versichern, dass alles heutzutage in Mitteleuropa wie geschmiert geht\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201eUnd in Sebnitz?\u201c fragte irgendjemand.<\/p>\n

Erich lachte, als er den Namen des Dorfes h\u00f6rte, wo das Kind Joseph starb, und wo die Eltern immer noch Neonazis beschuldigen, ihn ermordet zu haben. \u201eSebnitz?\u201c fragte er fast h\u00f6hnisch. \u201eSebnitz? Niemand denkt jetzt an Sebnitz, mein Freund. Und den Beh\u00f6rden in Sebnitz \u2013 dem Oberb\u00fcrgermeister und der Polizei \u2013 gelang es, die Eltern von allem und allen zu trennen. Sie sind ganz allein, und in der einsamen Lage, in der sie leben, sind sie zu ein paar plappernden Paranoikern geworden, denen niemand jemals glauben wird. Die Eltern wettern dar\u00fcber, dass einige Skinheads sie mit dem Deutschen Gru\u00df am hellen Tag begr\u00fc\u00dfen, dass in aller \u00d6ffentlichkeit Beleidigungen ihnen an die K\u00f6pfe geworfen werden, dass sie immer noch Morddrohungen bekommen, dass ihre Tochter in der Schule schickaniert wird, und dass ihr eigener Rechtsanwalt ein Honorar in H\u00f6he von DM 30.000,- von der s\u00e4chsischen Staatskanzlei entgegengenommen hat, d.h. von der Kanzlei, vor der er sie sch\u00fctzen sollen \u2013 und ich gebe zu, dass all das die reine Wahrheit ist \u2013 aber es ist uns gelungen, die Glaubw\u00fcrdigkeit der Eltern so gr\u00fcndlich zunichte zu machen und vielleicht auch ihren Verstand so v\u00f6llig zu zerst\u00f6ren, dass niemand ihnen jemals glauben wird\u201c.<\/p>\n

Er l\u00e4chelte vor Genugtuung. \u201eIn Berlin heute, hat die SPD vielleicht die Bundesregierung fest im Griff. Das aber, was wir fest im Griff haben, meine liebe Freunde, ist Deutschland.\u201c<\/p>\n

Ich ging weg. Ich wollte nicht, dass er noch eine Gelegenheit haben w\u00fcrde, mich als \u201eFreund\u201c zu bezeichnen.<\/p>\n
