\u201cGuenter Liebenow, Police Chief of Upper Erbtal-Ostergebirge: \u2018What you\u2019re saying now \u2013 that\u2019s your own opinion. That brings me to the question of where you got this information. I don\u2019t know that. But what you\u2019re saying doesn\u2019t jibe with the information I have about whether our police handle themselves the way you\u2019ve just described.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Commentary: A man named Manfred Lindemann is involved in a network of people who are determined to fight right-wing influence. He\u2019s a retired police official from Bavaria. For him, the behavior of the police in Pirna is intolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Journalist: So the young people went to the police station themselves to make a police report. But:<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim: \u2018Well, the police told us that they were sorry, but at the moment there was no officer available who could take down our statement, even though when we were standing there at the counter, we could see three officers just sitting around drinking coffee.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim: \u2018You feel so helpless. You always think that the police are your friend and helper, and that you can just go there and report, but nothing happens.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Journalist: The father of one of the victims is furious. The police report was terse: \u2018Brawl at the train station\u2019. In that \u2018brawl\u2019, more than twenty neo-Nazis, with their faces covered, attacked his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim\u2019s father: \u2018If the police and others would recognize the problem, then I think something could be done about it really quickly. It\u2019s just a question of providing security for the ordinary people living in the town. And those who think, \u201cWell, okay, nothing\u2019s happened to ME\u201d, shouldn\u2019t count themselves lucky just yet. Their situation could change very quickly, so that they find themselves in the same boat as today\u2019s victims\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Journalist: Organized physical attacks by they extreme right. The SSS is again active, but the police chief stonewalls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opfer: \u201aNa, also die Polizei hat uns gesagt, dass zur Zeit leider kein Beamter da ist, der eine Anzeige aufnehmen k\u00f6nnte, obwohl dort in dem Schalter schon drei Beamten sa\u00dfen, die gem\u00fctlich ihren Kaffee getrunken haben.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201aMan f\u00fchlt sich irgendwie hilflos, man glaubt eigentlich, Polizei dein Freund und Helfer, dass man sich halt melden kann und dann passiert nichts.\u2019<\/p>\n

W\u00fctend ist einer der V\u00e4ter. Die Polizei meldete lapidar: Schl\u00e4gerei am Bahnhof. Dabei wurde sein Sohn von \u00fcber 20 vermummten Neonazis \u00fcberfallen.<\/p>\n

Vater: \u201aWenn man das als Problem erkennen w\u00fcrde, auch von Seiten der Polizei, ich denke mal da k\u00f6nnte man wirklich ganz schnell ein bisschen was dagegen tun. Es geht ja eigentlich nur um Sicherheit. Letzten Endes geht es nur um Sicherheit f\u00fcr die Anwohner. Und diejenigen, die jetzt glauben, na gut, mir passiert ja nichts, die sollen sich mal nicht zu fr\u00fch freuen, das kann ganz schnell passieren, dann sind sie genauso mit dran\u2019.<\/p>\n

Organisierte \u00dcberf\u00e4lle von Rechten, die SSS wieder aktiv \u2013 doch der Polizeidirektor mauert.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim\u2019s statement: \u2018Then up above in the parking area, hidden behind the cars and in the bushes, there were twenty or twenty-five masked men in black outfits, some with ski masks, others with scarves over their faces. They didn\u2019t say a word and they didn\u2019t hesitate very long. They just jumped on me and hit the back of my head with a hard object so that I passed out. They\u2019d already kicked me so that I had cuts on my lip and on my head.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Journalist: The attack was planned beforehand. The right-wing thugs had been lying in wait for young people twice already on the weekend, at the train station. Whoever happened to come up the steps from the train platforms to the station itself was beaten up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police weren\u2019t interested in the victims at the scene, though. So the young people went to the police station themselves to make a police report.\u201d<\/p>\n

Und haben nicht lange gez\u00f6gert, keine Fragen gestellt, nichts gesagt, sondern sind mir gleich in die Seite rein gesprungen, haben mir danach einen harten Gegenstand auf den Hinterkopf geschlagen, so dass ich bewusstlos geworden bin, auf mich eingetreten, bis ich Platzwunden an der Lippe und am Kopf hatte.\u2019<\/p>\n

Der Angriff war geplant. Zweimal an diesem Wochenende lauerten die rechten Schl\u00e4ger Jugendlichen am Bahnhof auf. Zusammengeschlagen wurde, wer zuf\u00e4llig die Treppe hochkam.<\/p>\n

F\u00fcr die Opfer interessierte sich die Polizei nicht. Die Jungen gingen dann selbst zur Wache, um Anzeige zu erstatten.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cThe results of KONTRASTE\u2019s investigations indicate that members of the outlawed SSS also participated in the attacks. The local police, however, fail to recognize the new danger, even though organization and planning for the attacks goes ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth the seventeen-year-olds shown here were victims of such an attack only a few weeks ago. It was evening. They were coming into Pirna station by train. A group of right-wing extremists \u2013 neo-Nazis \u2013 was waiting for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continuation of a report broadcast by the program \u201cKontraste\u201d over the Rundfunk Berlin- Brandenburg television network on 28 August 2005, written by Alexander Kobylinski and Caroline Walter. The report indicates what sort of atmosphere existed in a town that is located a few kilometers from Sebnitz, even at the time Joseph and his parents were living there and when Joseph died:<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE: \u2018But don\u2019t you find it alarming to hear that people don\u2019t trust the police anymore?<\/p>\n

\u201cGuenter Liebenow, Police Chief of Upper Erbtal-Ostergebirge: \u2018If that\u2019s the way it is, and if what you say is true \u2013 which I don\u2019t want to believe completely \u2013 then it would be alarming; I would acknowledge that. But I don\u2019t know if the situation really is as you describe it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cCommentary by KONTRASTE: The police in Pirna are allowing the right-wing extremists, i.e., the neo-Nazis, to dominate the town. A short time ago, around sixty neo-Nazis marched up to the place where a city celebration was being held. They simply took over the stage, and the police didn\u2019t step in. The right-wing celebrated the action as a success.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis group, the Skinheads Saechsische Schweiz, or SSS for short, spread fear for years in the region. They wanted to drive away foreigners and dissenters. Explosives and weapons were seized by the authorities. Members of the SSS are again active, though, and are forming their organization again, despite being banned. Older members are again demonstrating their fundamental beliefs in public, along with young recruits, or they\u2019re simply striking out.<\/p>\n

\u201cGermany\u2019s neo-Nazi political party, the NPD (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands), is supporting the SSS on their home ground. The two NPD members shown here are members of the Pirna town council. Since these two have been active in local politics, the right-wing thugs have felt themselves to be in a strong position. We spoke with one NPD town councillor, Mirko Liebscher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aber mir ist die Lage so nicht bekannt, wie Sie die Lage darstellen.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Kommentar von KONTRASTE: Die Polizei in Pirna duldet, dass die Rechtsextremen die Stadt dominieren. Erst vor kurzem marschierten etwa 60 Neonazis bei einem Stadtfest auf. Sie \u00fcbernahmen einfach die B\u00fchne. Und die Polizei schritt nicht ein. Die Rechten feierten das als Erfolg. <\/p>\n

Diese Gruppe, Skinheads S\u00e4chsische Schweiz, kurz SSS, hat jahrelang in der Region Angst verbreitet. Mit Gewalt wollte sie Ausl\u00e4nder und Andersdenkende vertreiben. Damals wurden Sprengstoff und Waffen sichergestellt. Mitglieder der SSS sind trotz Verbot wieder aktiv, formieren sich neu. Alte Kader und junger Nachwuchs demonstrieren wieder \u00f6ffentlich ihre Gesinnung oder schlagen eben mal zu. <\/p>\n

Unterst\u00fctzt wird die SSS von der NPD vor Ort. Diese beiden NPD-Mitglieder sind Stadtr\u00e4te. Seitdem sie in Pirna Politik machen, haben auch die rechten Schl\u00e4ger wieder Oberwasser. Wir treffen uns mit dem NPD-Stadtrat Mirko Liebscher.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Commentary: A young man named Sven also had to learn how the police can shirk their responsibility. He was beaten up by a right-wing extremist (i.e., neo-Nazi) one evening while he was out walking. He was right in the middle of the town of Pirna, and he too hoped for some help from the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cSven: \u2018My girl friend called the police, right when the incident took place. She was told that they didn\u2019t have time. So I called the police myself and told them that the guys were still standing right there, in front of me. The police reaction was just the same; it was up to us to come to the precinct house and make a formal report\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Commentary: Since the police never showed up, the right-wing extremists (i.e., neo-Nazis) had a good laugh at that point, at Sven\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n

\u201cSven: \u2018Yeah, it was really humiliating. You felt really lost and abandoned. You just can\u2019t have any confidence in the police here anymore\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sven: \u201aMeine Freundin hat dann die Polizei gerufen, gleich nach dem Vorfall. Ihr wurde gesagt, dass die Polizei keine Zeit hat. Daraufhin hab ich dann selber noch mal bei der Polizei angerufen und hab auch mehrfach erw\u00e4hnt, dass die Leute noch vor mir stehen, und die Reaktion war halt dieselbe: wir sollen zur Polizeiwache kommen und selbst Anzeige erstatten\u2019.<\/p>\n

Sven wurde von den Rechtsextremen ausgelacht, weil die Polizei nicht kam.<\/p>\n

Sven: \u201aJa, es ist sehr erniedrigend, man f\u00fchlt sich sehr verloren und verlassen, und kann halt auch nicht weiterhin der Polizei vertrauen\u2019.\u201c<\/p>\n

I ran up the hill and said to them, very politely, that maybe they could hurry a little, because the people down below were getting beaten up. They came down the hill then and came up from behind. The neo-Nazis all ran away, right past the police of course, but that didn\u2019t bother the officers at all. I have no idea what they were thinking. They just let the neo-Nazis run away\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of doing anything about the attackers, the police collected the I.D.\u2019s of the victims. The police didn\u2019t even help bring the injured to the ambulance. They cleared out again. The young stayed where they were. They didn\u2019t want to let the neo-Nazis force them to leave. But the right-wing thugs came back, and went on beating people up. The young people made another emergency call to the police. It didn\u2019t do any good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Und ich bin nach oben gelaufen, hab zur Polizei halt gemeint, dass sie sich ein wenig beeilen k\u00f6nnten, weil die Leute gerade schon zusammengeschlagen werden. Die Polizei kam dann den Berg runter und kam von hinten und die Neonazis sind alle weggerannt, und die Neonazis nat\u00fcrlich an der Polizei vorbei und die Polizei hat es \u00fcberhaupt nicht gest\u00f6rt, keine Ahnung, was die sich gedacht haben, sie haben sie einfach weiterlaufen lassen.\u2019<\/p>\n

Stattdessen werden die Personalien der Opfer aufgenommen. Die Polizei hilft nicht einmal, die Verletzten zum Krankenwagen zu bringen. Sie r\u00fcckt wieder ab. Die Jugendlichen bleiben, sie wollen sich von Nazis nicht vertreiben lassen. Doch die rechten Schl\u00e4ger kehren zur\u00fcck, pr\u00fcgeln weiter. Die jungen Leute machen wieder einen Notruf bei der Polizei. Vergeblich\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim: \u2018Afterwards I heard that the police had stopped looking for the people who attacked us, even though a lot us had given the police a good description of what they looked like\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police let the right-wing thugs escape. And it wasn\u2019t the first time they did that in Pirna. The young people were also attacked at the beginning of May, on the lake here below us, when they wanted to do some camping and celebrating. A group of around fifty neo-Nazis stormed toward them and brutally beat both girls and boys, kicking them in the head and the back with their heavy boots. Some of the young people were seriously wounded, while the police, standing in the parking area above, could clearly see what was happening. The victims called for help. The police stayed where they were and watched.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortsetzung eines Beitrags der \u201eKontraste\u201c-Sendung vom 28.08.2005 \u00fcber den Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg gesendet, ein Bericht von Alexander Kobylinski und Caroline Walter. Der Bericht weist darauf hin, was f\u00fcr eine Atmosph\u00e4re existierte, in einer Stadt ein paar Kilometer von Sebnitz entfernt, auch in der Zeit, wo Joseph und seine Eltern dort wohnten, und wo Joseph starb: <\/p>\n

\u201eOpfer: \u201aNachher hab ich selber noch geh\u00f6rt, wie sie gesagt haben, dass sie die Suche nach den Leuten einstellen, obwohl wir eigentlich, viele Leute von uns, eine passende Beschreibung abgegeben haben\u2019.<\/p>\n

Die Polizei hat die rechten Schl\u00e4ger entwischen lassen. Nicht zum ersten Mal in Pirna. Anfang Mai sind die Jugendlichen schon einmal \u00fcberfallen worden. Hier unten am See. Sie wollten einfach nur zelten und feiern. Pl\u00f6tzlich st\u00fcrmt eine Gruppe von etwa 50 Neonazis auf sie los. Sie schlagen brutal auf M\u00e4dchen und Jungen ein, treten mit Stiefeln in den R\u00fccken, gegen den Kopf. Einige Jugendliche werden schwer verletzt. Und das vor den Augen der Polizei – sie wurde zu Hilfe gerufen, blieb aber oben auf dem Parkplatz, und konnte alles sehen\u201c<\/p>\n
