The report indicates what sort of atmosphere existed in a town that is located a few kilometers from Sebnitz, even at the time Joseph and his parents were living there and when Joseph died:<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim (in hospital): \u2018I turned around, and a Nazi thug was standing behind me. He said, \u201cNow we\u2019re gonna get you too.\u201d Then he hit me in the face with a pair of brass knuckles.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Reporter: \u2018How badly were you injured?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cVictim: \u2018I had a laceration under my eye and possibly a broken cheek bone.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKONTRASTE Commentary: \u2018The attackers bawled out \u201cSieg Heil!\u201d And the victim\u2019s friend? He apparently sustained serious skull and brain injuries. The police arrived too late\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPirna, a town in the \u2018Switzerland of Saxony\u2019, a friendly tourist destination \u2013 images that are the region\u2019s livelihood. At night, though, the young people of Pirna hardly dare to walk the streets. It\u2019s Saturday, and we\u2019ve received a call that there have been injuries \u2013 Right-wing extremists have attacked some young people in the town. We visit the victims in the hospital; out of fear they want to remain anonymous in an interview\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to Pirna, the town in the beautiful region known as \u201cthe Switzerland of Saxony,\u201d the town with the ugly problem: right-wing extremists have literally beaten out an area of sovereignty over the streets and squares of the town \u2013 by beating up ordinary townspeople.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the police? They\u2019re not there. At least not when you urgently need them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeitmann\u2019s successor, Manfred Kolbe, also a member of the Christian Democratic Union, recommended that the town of Sebnitz sue the newspaper \u2018Bild\u2019 for damages, because it was \u2018Bild\u2019 that first wrote a story about the boy Joseph\u2019s case. That such a statement by the Minister of Justice, who is the public prosecutor\u2019s superior, would strengthen neither the public prosecutor\u2019s motivation to investigate the case nor the readiness of witnesses to make any further statements is obvious. Such behavior during an ongoing investigation borders on obstruction of justice or the crime of aiding the perpetrator or perpetrators of an offense by preventing their prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to Thomas Jurk, parliamentary leader of the Social Democrats in Saxony, soon after Joseph\u2019s death the government of Saxony was also informed that there had not been a swimming pool accident but a murder carried out by the right wing. Jurk referred to a letter that had been written by the late Joachim Richter, who was a member of the legislature in Saxony. The letter was sent to the then Christian Democrat minister of justice in Saxony, Steffen Heitmann, who ignored it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young man who threatened the television team also received support, in a sense, from Saxony\u2019s Minister President Kurt Biedenkopf, who told the press there were indications right-wing extremists were being paid by the media to create the kind of scene the man had made. Spiegel-TV, one of Germany\u2019s most reliable broadcasters, whose reporters had taped the scene, contemptuously rejected Biedenkopf\u2019s assertion.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the reaction of one of Germany\u2019s main political parties, the Christian Democratic Union, in the Sebnitz city council and throughout the state of Saxony could only have strengthened the self-confidence of the right-wingers. Three years before this article was written, indications that Joseph had been murdered reached the highest levels of the town government. These indications, however, were all rejected as unfounded, and anyone who made such accusations was dismissed as a \u2018nutcase\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201eEr bekam ebenfalls Sch\u00fctzenhilfe von Ministerpr\u00e4sident Biedenkopf. Es gebe Hinweise, erkl\u00e4rte dieser der Presse, dass die Rechten f\u00fcr solche Auftritte von den Medien bezahlt w\u00fcrden – ein Vorwurf den Spiegel-TV, das die Szenen gedreht hatte, mit Verachtung zur\u00fcckwies.<\/p>\n

Auch die Reaktion der in Stadtrat und im Land dominierenden CDU kann das Selbstbewusstsein der Rechten nur st\u00e4rken. Hinweise auf eine Mordtat hatten vor drei Jahren nat\u00fcrlich auch das Rathaus erreicht. Dort wurden aber alle Hinweise darauf abgewiesen und diejenigen, die diese Vorw\u00fcrfe vorbrachten, als \u201aSpinner\u2019 abgetan.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kantelberg-Abdulla family has been living in fear of right-wing extremists since the death of their boy Joseph. They have received threatening telephone calls: \u2018You\u2019re next\u2019. Doors were locked and windows barred at their house in Sebnitz. They never wanted to answer the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the case became known, the right-wing mob openly threatened the family in the presence of the media. Anyone who became involved on the side of the family was also threatened. Once a young man stood in front of the Abdullas\u2019 windows and yelled, \u2018Tomorrow you die\u2019, while television cameras recorded the scene. The television crew talked to him and tried to force him to be quiet. He then screamed at the reporters and looked as though he expected them all simply to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe German neo-Nazi party known as the NPD (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands) has about 1000 members in the state of Saxony. This is a higher membership figure than in most other German states. The party is represented on the Sebnitz city council by Johannes Mueller, a physician. The party received 6.5 percent of the vote in the last city elections. The surrounding area, known as the \u2018Saechsische Schweiz\u2019 or the \u2018Switzerland of Saxony\u2019, is the stronghold of neo-Nazi activities. A group known as \u2018Skinheads Saechsische Schweiz\u2019 is reputed to be the best organized and also \u2013 as a police raid recently demonstrated \u2013 a heavily-armed and militant Nazi group. An association called the \u2018White Warrior Crew Sebnitz\u2019, a group close to the NPD, is active in Sebnitz itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRenate Kantelberg has indignantly rejected the idea that witnesses were bought. On the contrary, she said, she had impressed upon all the witnesses that they must not say anything that they could not remember exactly. She said that at most she had given them a package of cough drops or a packet of cigarettes.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly what happened on 13 June 1997 at the Sebnitz swimming pool cannot at present be determined, and probably never will be, since the Dresden chief public prosecutor now retains all control over any investigations. However, no one can ignore the fact that the neo-Nazis continue to carry on their atrocious activities in Sebnitz and feel that they are stronger than ever, especially since the former Minister-President of Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf, while still in office, made his statement casting doubt on the idea that the circumstances of Joseph\u2019s death were anything other than an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n
