Continuation of the letter of last week:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis official version was called into question even in the period immediately after Joseph\u2019s death. There were indications right away that Joseph was not the victim of an accident but that he was murdered \u2013 by a group racist young people. Joseph\u2019s parents, Saad Abdulla und Renate Abdulla-Kantelberg, received indications that Joseph had been deliberately drowned. A few days after the boy\u2019s death, they reported his death to the police as a murder. The authorities investigated but came up with nothing. On 3 February 1998 the police stopped their investigation and closed the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201eDiese offizielle Version wurde bereits unmittelbar nach Josephs Tod in Zweifel gezogen. Sofort gab es Hinweise, dass Joseph nicht verungl\u00fcckte, sondern ermordet wurde – von einer Gruppe rassistischer Jugendlicher. Die Eltern von Joseph erhielten Hinweise, dass Joseph ertr\u00e4nkt wurde. Bereits wenige Tage nach dem Tod ihres Sohnes erstatteten Saad Abdulla und Renate Abdulla-Kantelberg Anzeige “wegen eines T\u00f6tungsdeliktes”. Die Polizei ermittelte, aber erfolglos. Am 3. Februar 1998 stellte sie die Ermittlungen ein und schloss den Fall ab.\u201c<\/p>\n

Continuation of the letter of last week:<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the official version, Joseph was the victim of a tragic swimming pool accident. The doctor on emergency call, who tried to revive Joseph at the pool, wrote on the death certificate, which he filled out in his car: \u201cFound drowned at the swimming pool; hour-long resuscitation attempt failed.\u201d As the cause of death he noted, \u201cDrowning while playing in the water.\u201d A policeman at the Pirna office noted in his file that Joseph had been in the water without a life preserver, that he swam away from his friend, and that his sister Diana left him alone for fifteen minutes in the pool for non-swimmers. The depth of the water in that pool is 1.35 meters at its deepest point. Joseph was 1.27 meters tall, according to the forensic specialist.\u201d<\/p>\n

The case of the death of six-year-old Joseph Abdulla in the small eastern German town of Sebnitz is a warning. Independently of the final real circumstances of his death, this case shows how far advanced the dominance of right-wing gangs is in eastern Germany \u2013 because of the support they\u2019ve received from government authorities and the mainstream Christian Democrat party.<\/p>\n

The boy Joseph \u2013 like two hundred other residents of Sebnitz \u2013 was at the local public swimming pool on 13 June 1997 with his sister, who was then twelve years old. The six-year-old boy, the son of a German-Iraqi couple, registered pharmacists by profession, who had only a year earlier settled in this picturesque town, fifty kilometers south of Dresden on the Czech border, died that day. Exactly how he died has been the subject of discussion not only in Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe German government has supported the idea of the cancellation of billions of euros of debt owed to various banks. This was done by appealing to a moral duty toward the Iraqi people. In the same way, I appeal to a moral duty that Germany has toward its citizens of foreign extraction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI repeat: it cannot be said that our problem is a purely private banking matter. That is a simplification. The case of our son Joseph was a political affair, it was a murder carried out by right-wing extremists at public swimming pool. The truth of it was concealed with the help of the justice system in Saxony and through the political influence of its former minister-president, Kurt Biedenkopf, who said, \u201cSaxony is immune to right-wing extremism,\u201d and who wanted to preserve the supposedly good reputation of eastern Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cGerman politicians are constantly reminding us all that we must learn from our past, that we must not forget the past, and that we must confront it. Your recent visit to Israel, Mr. President, and to the memorial to Jews murdered by the Nazis \u2013 to countless children murdered by the Nazis \u2013 should also be a reminder and a confirmation of these ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

The message is dated 1 February 2005 and in it the value of our building at Rosenstrasse 11 in Sebnitz is estimated at about 205,000 euros. <\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, what we invested in remodelling the building so that it would include living quarters and a pharmacy amounted to 1,150,000 euros. Half of that was a down payment we made ourselves, and the other half was a mortgage from EuroHypo Bank in Leipzig. If the property is sold for 205,000 euros, it represents a squandering of the money we invested. In other words, the building is being offered for sale for almost nothing. Worse than that, though, is the fact that we will be responsible, for the rest of our lives, for repaying the remainder of the mortgage we received from EuroHypo Bank, a mortgage on property that no longer belongs to us. And this property, which will be sold for a fraction of its value, was meant to provide for our future and the future of our children, Joseph and Diana. If and when that happens, the tragedy surrounding the family of the boy Joseph will reach what may be its nadir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPutting my faith and trust in you, I have written to you once more because you are the chief representative of the German people. You are a person who believes in justice and order, who has supported human rights all over the world, and I ask you to make an effort on our behalf. In my earlier letter, I asked for your intervention in the ongoing deprivation of my family\u2019s rights. You responded only to the surface difficulty, saying that you cannot become involved in \u201cbanking matters.\u201d However, this case is not that simple, and dare I say that you must not make it that simple. Through the efforts of the authorities, the murder of my son Joseph has metamorphosed into a \u201ctrifle,\u201d a \u201cswimming pool accident,\u201d in order to stifle any possible international reaction and to guarantee that Germany has an untarnished reputation. Attention has turned away from the neo-Nazis who murdered my son. Discussion of their crimes has become a public debate about the legal niceties of trying once more to have the German Supreme Court ban neo-Nazis as an organized political entity.<\/p>\n
