Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,<\/p>\n
\u201cLast time we talked,\u201d Francesca said, \u201cI read to you a written statement about the death of the boy Joseph Kantelberg-Abdullah, a statement made by the then twelve-year-old Sven May. In that statement, which he wrote for Joseph\u2019s sister, he said that Joseph had been killed in the municipal swimming pool in Sebnitz.<\/p>\n
\u201cSven changed his story completely, however, just as his brother had done when he was questioned by the police in Sebnitz a year later, on 29 November 2000. What is perhaps interesting about the questioning is the fact that the police never asked him about his earlier written statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis transcript of the police questioning was given to me by Joseph\u2019s parents, even though the document contradicts what they believe to be true, and what they believe to be true is what Sven May had written in his earlier statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe questioning begins with the usual warning about telling the truth. It says at the beginning of the transcript that Sven\u2019s father, Hanspeter May was present.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then Francesca began to read the transcript:<\/p>\n
Question: Have you already made statements to the police or to others about this matter?<\/p>\n
Answer: To the police, no. Once in the pharmacy to the (Kantelberg-)Abdullah family. They asked me to come with them for a few minutes. That\u2019s what I did. Mr. and Mrs. (Kantelberg-)Abdullah were upstairs in the pharmacy. I was alone there, I mean, without my brother. They asked me what happened in the swimming pool. I said, that I\u2019d been playing with Joseph at the pool. I knew Joseph well, we often played together with remote-control cars. I went to my place, which I\u2019m indicating with a \u201c1\u201d on the drawing in front of me. Joseph went to his place. This I\u2019m indicating on the drawing with a \u201c2.\u201d I asked Joseph if he wanted to come into the water with me. Joseph and I went into the shallow water. We took a ball with us. I played for about thirty minutes with Joseph and then said to him, \u201cGet out now. I want to go play in the deeper water.\u201d I saw some other friends there. Joseph sat on the edge of the deeper pool. I\u2019m indicating the place with a \u201c3.\u201d Then we played around in the whirlpool and for a while I didn\u2019t look over at Joseph. Behind the place where Joseph was sitting was a bench. I\u2019m indicating this with a \u201c4.\u201d There were about six young people sitting on the bench. There were three girls in the group. Then I went back into the whirlpool, because they turned the water back on. Later I saw that several people were at the place where Joseph was laid out. This place I\u2019m indicating with a \u201c5.\u201d Then I ran over there and saw Joseph. I told this to my brother, Rene. He went home right away.<\/p>\n
Francesca commented, \u201cIt sounds as if he were reading a script.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bitte vergessen Sie nicht, dass der Autor dieses Briefes Autodidakt ist, was die deutsche Sprache betrifft, und er wei\u00df, dass, wenn es um eine \u00dcbersetzung aus der deutschen Sprache ins Englische geht, viele Fehler hervortreten m\u00fcssen. Er hofft aber, man werde diese Fehler \u00fcbersehen, um hinter den Fehlern das sehen zu k\u00f6nnen, was in diesem Schreiben und in dieser Aff\u00e4re von zentraler Bedeutung ist.<\/p>\n

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,<\/p>\n
Francesca sagte uns, \u201eLetztes Mal habe ich Ihnen eine schriftliche Erkl\u00e4rung \u00fcber den Tod von dem Kind Joseph vorgelesen, die von dem damals zw\u00f6lfj\u00e4hrigen Sven May ausgeschrieben wurde. In dieser Erkl\u00e4rung, die er f\u00fcr Josephs Schwester schrieb, sagte er, dass Joseph im Schwimmbad von Sebnitz get\u00f6tet worden sei.<\/p>\n
Wie sein Bruder aber es tat, hat Sven seine Geschichte vollig ge\u00e4ndert, als er von der Polizei ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter, am 29.11.2000, in Sebnitz vernommen wurde. Was in dieser Vernehmung besonders interessant ist, ist die Tatsache, dass die Polizei ihn \u00fcber die schriftliche Erkl\u00e4rung nicht gefragt hat.<\/p>\n
Diese Zeugenvernehmung von Sven May habe ich auch von Josephs Eltern bekommen, obwohl das Dokument dem widerspricht, was sie f\u00fcr die wahr halten, und das, was sie f\u00fcr wahr halten, ist das, was Sven May in seiner schon erw\u00e4hnten Erkl\u00e4rung geschrieben hat.<\/p>\n
Die Vernehmung beginnt mit der \u00fcblichen Ermahnung, die Wahrheit zu sagen. Es steht am Anfang, dass Svens Vater, Hanspeter May, dabei war.\u201c<\/p>\n
Dann begann Francesca die Zeugenvernehmung vorzulesen:<\/p>\n
Frage: Hast du zu dieser Sache bereits Aussagen bei der Polizei oder anderen Personen gemacht?<\/p>\n
Antwort: Bei der Polizei nicht. Einmal in der Apotheke bei der Familie Abdulla. Die haben mich gefragt, ob ich mal mitkommen w\u00fcrde. Das habe ich getan. Oben in der Apotheke waren dann Frau und Herr Abdulla. Ich war allein, also ohne meinen Bruder dort. Die haben mich gefragt wie das passiert ist im Bad. Ich sagte, da\u00df ich mit Joseph im Bad noch gespielt hatte. Joseph kannte ich gut, wir spielten oft mit ferngesteuerten Autos zusammen. Ich ging auf meinen Platz, den ich auf der vorgelegten Skizze mit 1 bezeichne. Joseph ist auch auf seinen Platz gegangen. Diesen bezeichne ich auf der Skizze mit 2. Ich habe Joseph gefragt, ob er mit in das Wasser kommt. Joseph und ich sind zum Pilz in das flache Wasser gegangen. Wir haben einen Ball mitgenommen. Ich spielte ca. 30 Minuten mit Joseph und sagte zu Joseph: \u201eGeh mal raus, ich will zum Str\u00f6mungskanal ins tiefe Wasser.\u201c Dort sah ich andere Freunde. Joseph setzte sich an den Rand des tiefen Beckens. Die Stelle bezeichne ich mit 3. Dann haben wir im Strudel getobt und ich habe eine Weile nicht hingesehen zu Joseph. Hinter der Stelle, wo Joseph sa\u00df ist eine Bank. Diese bezeichne ich mit 4. Auf der Bank sa\u00dfen ca. 6 Jugendliche. Dabei waren auch 3 M\u00e4dchen. Dann bin ich wieder in den Strudel, da dieser wieder an ging. Ich sah sp\u00e4ter, dass mehrere Leute an der Stelle waren, wo Joseph dann drau\u00dfen hingelegt wurde. Diese Stelle bezeichne ich mit 5. Ich rannte dann dort hin und sah Joseph. Das habe ich Rene, meinem Bruder erz\u00e4hlt. Rene ist gleich nach Hause gegangen.<\/p>\n
Francesca bemerkte, \u201eEs klingt, als ob er ein Drehbuch las.\u201c<\/p>\n
