Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,<\/p>\n

This week Francesca began to read out another transcript of an interrogation of Rene May by the Dresden police, a transcript that she had also received from Joseph\u2019s parents, the Kantelberg-Abdullahs. According to the transcript, the interrogation was conducted by the Dresden Police on 29 November 2000, in the apartment where the Rene May lives. It begins with the words, \u201cI am still aware of what I was told at my first interrogation (about being under oath). My father Hanspeter May was present at (this) interrogation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Question: What do you want to add to what you said at your first interrogation?<\/p>\n

Answer: First, I remember the name of the boy who was also at the pool and who was taken upstairs by the Abdullahs. He\u2019s called Steve Mechling, and he lives on Finkenbergstrasse. I showed officer Hartmann the house he lives in. About a year ago I was in the Abdullahs\u2019 pharmacy. I was alone there. I went into the pharmacy and Herr Abdullah came out from the back room. I asked him, if I could have some candy, and he gave me two or three bonbons. The man said to me, \u201cYou\u2019ll get a large reward when everything is over.\u201d Then Frau Abdullah also came to the front of the shop and when she was there, Herr Abdullah said to me that I would get DM 2000. I didn\u2019t say anything, because other people came into the pharmacy. I left the pharmacy.<\/p>\n

Question: Was that the only time that Herr Abdullah said that to you or was it the first time?<\/p>\n

Answer: No, Herr Abdullah said that to me before, and he said it repeatedly, About two or three times. But I can remember everything about that one time in particular.<\/p>\n

Question: Do you know other people who were told the same thing?<\/p>\n

Answer: Yes, he said it to David Schlaeger and Annette Lossburg. They told me.<\/p>\n

Question: Can you make a mark on the sketch of the pool area to show where you were lying?<\/p>\n

Answer: Yes, I can. I\u2019m marking the place with \u201cx 1\u201d and making the sketch a part of this interrogation.<\/p>\n

Question: Why didn\u2019t you say anything about the reward in your first interrogation?<\/p>\n

Answer: I was kind of excited and I forgot. I can\u2019t say anything more right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the record states that the interrogation was completed at 2:35 p.m.,\u201d said Francesca. \u201cBelow that are the signatures of Rene May, his father, and the officer who was responsible for conducting the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she added, \u201cEven if the boy was paid, as he said, I still think that he was telling the truth about Joseph\u2019s death at the first interrogation before the judge in Dresden, and not in the later interrogation by the police. Whether or not the parents made a gross error in judgment and actually did pay him, the truth is still the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,<\/p>\n

diese Woche begann Francesca noch ein Protokoll einer Zeugenvernehmung von Rene May vorzulesen, ein Protokoll, das sie auch von Josephs Eltern, Dr. und Frau Dr. Kantelberg-Abdullah bekommen hatte. Diese Vernehmung, steht es darin, wurde vom Polizeipr\u00e4sidium Dresden gef\u00fchrt, am 29.11.2000 in der Wohnung des Zeugen. Es beginnt mit den Worten, \u201eMir ist aus meiner ersten Vernehmung die Belehrung noch in Erinnerung. Mein Vater Hanspeter May nimmt an der Vernehmung teil.\u201c<\/p>\n

Frage: Was m\u00f6chtest Du Deiner 1. Vernehmung noch hinzuf\u00fcgen?<\/p>\n

Antwort: Zuerst ist mir der Name des Jungen eingefallen, der auch im Bad war und durch die Abdullas die Treppe hochgezogen wurde. Er hei\u00dft Steve Mechling und wohnt auf der Finkenbergstra\u00dfe. Ich habe der Beamtin Hartmann gezeigt in welchem Haus er wohnt. Vor etwa einem Jahr war ich in der Apotheke bei den Abdullas. Ich war allein dort. Ich ging in die Apotheke hinein und da kam der Herr Abdulla von hinten vor. Ich fragte ihn, ob ich etwas S\u00fcsses bekommen kann und er gab mir zwei oder drei Bonbons. Der Mann sagte zu mir: \u201eIhr bekommt eine hohe Belohnung, wenn alles vorbei ist.\u201c Dann kam die Frau Abdulla auch vor und in ihrem Beisein, sagte Herr Abdulla zu mir, das ich 2000 DM bekommen sollte. Ich sagte dazu nichts, weil andere Leute die Apotheke betraten. Ich verlie\u00df die Apotheke.<\/p>\n

Frage: War das das einzigste Mal, dass Herr Abdulla das zu Dir gesagt hat bzw. war es das erste Mal?<\/p>\n

Antwort: Nein, Herr Abdulla hat mir das vorher auch schon gesagt und auch immer wieder. So etw 2 \u2013 3 Mal. Aber an das eine Mal kann ich mich noch genau erinnern.<\/p>\n

Frage: Sind Dir auch noch andere Leute bekannt, denen das gesagt wurde?<\/p>\n

Antwort: Ja, er hat das auch dem David Schl\u00e4ger und der Annette L\u00f6\u00dfburg gesagt. Die haben mir das erz\u00e4hlt.<\/p>\n

Frage: Kannst Du in die Skizze vom Bad einzeichnen, wo Du im Bad gelegen hast?<\/p>\n

Antwort: Ja, das kann ich. Ich bezeichne den Liegeplatz mit x 1 und f\u00fcge die Skizze meiner Vernehmung bei.<\/p>\n

Frage: Warum hast Du das mit der Belohnung nicht in Deiner ersten Vernehmung schon angegeben?<\/p>\n

Antwort: Ich war ziemlich aufgeregt und da habe ich es vergessen. Mehr kann ich im Moment nicht sagen.<\/p>\n

\u201eDann steht es\u201c, sagte uns Francesca, \u201edass die Vernehmung wurde um 14:35 Uhr abgeschlossen. Unten stehen die Unterschriften von Rene May, von seinem Vater und von der Beamtin, die f\u00fcr die Leitung der Vernehmung verantwortlich war.\u201c<\/p>\n

Dann f\u00fcgte sie hinzu, \u201eAuch wenn der Junge bezahlt wurde, wie er es sagte, glaube ich immer noch, dass er in seiner ersten Vernehmung vor der Richterin in Dresden die Wahrheit \u00fcber Josephs Tod sagte, und nicht in der sp\u00e4teren Vernehmung von der Polizei. Ob die Eltern eine grobe Fehleinsch\u00e4tzung gemacht und ihm bezahlt haben, oder nicht, bleibt die Wahrheit die Wahrheit\u201c.<\/p>\n
