{"id":70,"date":"2008-04-08T17:10:08","date_gmt":"2008-04-08T22:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/mediarepublic\/2008\/04\/08\/librarians-rock\/"},"modified":"2008-04-08T17:47:54","modified_gmt":"2008-04-08T22:47:54","slug":"librarians-rock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/mediarepublic\/2008\/04\/08\/librarians-rock\/","title":{"rendered":"Librarians Rock!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheesebikini\/2321926392\/\" title=\"photo sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2383\/2321926392_464848c1e9_m.jpg\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(but you knew that, right?)<br \/>\nThanks to Christine Gorman and her <a href=\"http:\/\/globalhealthreport.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/abortion-and-database-censorship.html\">Global Health Report<\/a> for sharing the inspiring story of  librarians on a  couple of mailing <a href=\"http:\/\/list.uvm.edu\/cgi-bin\/wa?A2=ind0804A&amp;L=MEDLIB-L&amp;D=1&amp;T=0&amp;P=40210\">lists<\/a> breaking a great story about some over-zealous folks at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\/Center for Communication Programs (Mike Bloomberg, take back that donation!) had decided that US government funded <a href=\"http:\/\/db.jhuccp.org\/ics-wpd\/popweb\/aboutpl.html\">Popline<\/a>, the self-proclaimed &#8220;world&#8217;s largest database on reproductive health,&#8221; should not allow people to search on the term &#8220;abortion.&#8221; The story then got to <a href=\"http:\/\/maudnewton.com\/blog\/?p=8456\">blogosphere<\/a> and from there to the traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.villagevoice.com\/bushbeat\/archives\/2008\/04\/government_bans.php\">media<\/a> (in this context more than ever not to be called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medterms.com\/script\/main\/art.asp?articlekey=25989\">MSM<\/a> for &#8220;mainstream media&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>The saddest thing is that this was classic self-censorship, the Popline folks decided on their own to do this, presumably in hopes of avoiding angering the administration that brought us the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/english\/docs\/2006\/11\/16\/usdom14627.htm\">Global Gag Rule<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheesebikini\/2321926392\/\">Naughty Librarians&#8217; Convention 2008<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nOriginally uploaded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/people\/cheesebikini\/\">cheesebikini<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(but you knew that, right?)
